Tan and Young Do stand apart, but together, looking out into the city. YD finally breaks the silence: “It’s cold.” He’s describing the weather, but it is also how he feels. Tan adds, “It’s cold…and dark.” Silence falls between them again as they each try to fight off the cold and dark feeling hovering over them because of their fathers.

At a cafe, Tan discusses his situation with a woman, who we learn is a lawyer. Tan doesn’t trust the lawyers at Jeguk anymore, and he wants this new lawyer’s help transferring legal proxy rights to Won from JS for his stocks.

Yoon and Won are busy preparing for battle against JS too. Yoon reports to Won which person has how many percentage of stocks. Won notes that because the margin between the percentage held by JS and her people are close to the percentage held by Won and Tan and their people, it’s going to a battle to try to get the rest of the stockholders to side with them. He calls for a meeting of people who were said to be on Chairman Kim’s side.

Unfortunately, nobody is showing up at this meeting as Won, Tan, and Yoon wait. Eventually, two people who up, still loyal to the Chairman after 20 years of allegiance.

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-00h03m42s4

JS’s meeting of people on her side is a little fuller, and Esther is there too. JS thanks her for being here, but Esther declares that she has not made up her mind yet. She wants to stand opposite to Chairman Kim, but she is not sure if the opposite is JS or Won.

At school, CY is telling ES what happened to Chairman Kim and that Tan has gone with his father to obtain the power of attorney from the overseas stockholders one by one. ES understands that is why Tan didn’t call her yesterday. CY also tells her Tan and Yoon will be gone for ten days.

Tan and Yoon are on a plane, and Yoon asks if Tan knows why he has to go with him to meet these people. Tan replies, “Yes. I am a young boy who might lose his father soon, and the young son that is especially loved by the Chairman.” Yoon affirms- “Because business in the end is about moving someone’s heart and getting that person’s signature.” Tan wonders why his father could have done this for 20 years.

At her house, ES reads a letter that Tan has left with an owl doll. He apologizes for leaving without calling her first, and warns her he might not be able to contact her since he is on a business trip. He adds in Tan’s signature style, “You’re going to die if you cheat on me while I am gone.” Pfft! Fortunately, Tan concludes, “I’m going to miss you a lot, Cha Eun Sang.”

YD and his dad are having a tense dinner. Worried, YD really wants to know what is going on, and as he is about to ask, his father finally speaks up. He informs YD that he thinks the investigation into Zeus will happen quickly, so he will voluntarily go to the police to be questioned. When YD asks if dad will be arrested, Dad tries to bulk up his son the best way he can. He advices YD to not trust anyone except the vice president of Zeus, to only speak through lawyers, and to go to YD’s aunt’s house if he doesn’t return quickly- “Don’t stay alone at home.” He adds lightly with a smile, “Don’t neglect your kitchen duties just because I am not here.” More seriously, he says, “I will come out quickly.” YD, the young kid that he is, can only weakly nod his head, still looking worried and scared.

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-00h15m24s238

The next day, YD watches the news that tells him that things are not looking good for his dad. He shuts off the TV, and when the Zeus lawyers come to see YD, he jumps out of his seat, worried about his dad. The lawyers reassure YD, telling him not to worry about anything and to go one as usual; they will take care of everything. One lawyer also relays a message that YD’s dad sent: “There has to be rules; there shouldn’t be any cheating.”

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-00h21m30s196

YD has come to see the kid he used to bully at his new school. The kid looks scared to see YD, and asks why he came. YD replies that he came to apologize- “I’m sorry. Truly. I apologize. I am really sorry.” The kid says he is surprised that YD even knows how to apologize, but if he is really sorry, then he should feel guilty for the rest of his life. He declares he is not going to accept YD’s apology ever. “Don’t come see me again.”

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-00h21m26s146

ES uploads a post onto her and Tan’s chat room. She writes, “The Seoul without you feels a little colder.” She sees the news story about YD’s dad on TV. She writes, “I just saw YD’s dad on the news. Seeing a family member’s face on the news that everyone in the country is watching…what is the weight of that misfortune? Living in that world that everyone desires, how hurt were you, Young Do, and the other kids?”

Eun Sang continues. “Because I am the first to arrive at school everyday, I am sometimes able to witness someone drawing in the body outline. I was very surprised. It wasn’t just one person. One day it was Hyo Shin, another day Ye Sol, another day Myung Soo, who appears so bright all the time, and another day it was Rachel. And today, it was Young Do. Was it from the moment I learned that everyone was the culprit? I couldn’t simply just be envious of them or dislike them.” Eun Sang asks the question that weighs on her mind- “Tan. Did you ever draw the body outline alone one early morning?”

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-00h42m03s243 vlcsnap-2013-12-13-00h42m14s92

YD has come to his mom’s café. He stares at her from outside the window, but before she can see him, he hides. Tears fall down his face as he stands frozen to the ground, unable to go in.

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-00h45m00s220

Eun Sang’s voice: ” Whether it be too heavy, too severe, or too sad, I hope getting hurt is not the only thing you are able to do. I hope that their weight is not the reason you break apart. I miss you, Kim Tan.”

Tan is back in Korea, visiting his dad in the hospital. Chairman Kim is still in the coma, but Won says he has gotten a lot better. Yoon reports that they were able to get many people to side with them, due to Tan’s help. Won asks Tan to go back to the house together to take care of it since dad is not there.

Won and Tan are back in their house again. There, Won asks Tan to meet YD. He wants Tan to get YD’s help since he will be able to sign and vote in his father’s stead. Tan asks Won to promise, then, to keep doing business with Zeus even if YD’s dad gets arrested. Won promises.

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-01h03m05s61

Tan has come to see ES at her cafe part-time job. ES is surprised to see him as he calls out “You’re working hard, Cha Eun Sang.” He spreads open his arms, and Eun Sang runs into them. They hug each other tight, happy to see one another again.

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-01h03m20s211vlcsnap-2013-12-13-01h03m23s240

Tan and ES sit down inside, and ES asks Tan about his dad, the upcoming stockholders meeting, and if everything went well on the business trip. When Tan answers them weakly, ES tries to cheer him up by reassuring him that she didn’t cheat on him while he was gone. Tan smiles at this, and he asks her to hold his hand. She immediately takes it, and Tan cries out that she should be holding his hand with her heart, not with strength. I guess ES’s grip is strong, hehe. ES confirms, saying her heart is strong too. Tan tells her he missed her, which makes Eun Sang smile. Eun Sang replies, “Stay strong, Kim Tan.”

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-01h14m18s123

Tan has come to see YD, saying he is sorry to come at such a time like this but that he needs YD’s help. Tan says he will pay him back for this one day, even if they can’t be friends. YD replies that Tan can pay back now- consider this his compensation for the bad thing he said about Tan’s mom. Tan, as a sign of agreement, just informs YD that he doesn’t need to come to the stockholder’s meeting himself, just send the proxy papers through his lawyers. YD tells Tan to leave since he has to go do the dishes. He explains to Tan that this is the only thing he can do right now.

Young Do is washing the dishes, and he cuts his finger on a knife he is cleaning.

Yoon has come to see Esther at her office to ask her a favor. Per usual, there is wit and charm in the way he interacts with Esther, and the two lightheartedly joke around a bit. Esther understands that Yoon has come to get her to sign her vote to Won’s side, and she hands it over. Yoon thanks her, and Esther gently wishes the best for him in the future. Yoon does the same.

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-01h30m11s197

Won meets with Yang, the daughter of BS Telecom and his potential marriage partner. He needs her father’s help, and he asks if she will come to the stockholders’ meeting. Yang points out that it sounds like Won is saying he will marry her- is he okay with that? We don’t hear Won’s answer.

The meeting starts, putting Chairman Kim’s dismissal up for vote. JS, Tan, Won, as well as Yang are there. People vote, and the results are tallied. The result is in Won and Tan’s favor- Chairman Kim stays.

JS has been defeated, for now. She warns Won and Tan that this is just the beginning. Won replies he learned through this experience which people are the enemies. JS advices him to never let down his defenses. Then, Yoon runs up to announce that Chairman Kim has woken up, and he is in surgery now. JS, who has overhead this on her way out, looks unsettled.

KA, Won, Tan, Yoon wait anxiously at the hospital in front of the operation center. After hours that may feel like days, the surgeons finally come out and announced that the surgery was successful. Now they just have to wait for Chairman Kim to wake up. KA starts crying, and as Tan comforts her, Won gives her a look that is probably the softest look he has given her ever.

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-01h55m36s85

YD has come to his mom’s café again. This time he enters. His mom immediately tears up when she sees him, but YD can’t look at her in the eye yet. She tearfully calls his name. YD cautiously says hi. She asks him the same thing she wrote on the wall of that restaurant- “Did you get along well?” YD replies, “No.” She walks closer to her son and wipes the tears that have started to fall down his face. She comments on how tall he has grown, also adding, “My son has become so handsome.” YD speaks the words he has wanted to for so long-”Mom. Mom.” She nods, “Yes,” and urgently hugs him. She cries that she was sorry; she is sorry for not waiting longer then. She was planning to go see him again soon after….but….she just apologizes for not doing so. Young Do hugs his mom tighter in response as they both cry into each other’s shoulders.

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-01h55m06s43

HS gives ES some his books. He thanks her, saying, “Thank you, Cha Eun Sang, for being a heartwarming cut (note: like a cut from a movie) in my brutal high school life.” Eun Sang remarks that it sounds like a goodbye. HS just tells her to study hard and the he hopes she and Tan become a boring romance movie. She asks if he is really going somewhere, but he doesn’t answer, just smiling.

Esther is holding a meeting with her designers, when R comes in. After the meeting, E asks for R’s opinion about the new line, and R says she likes it, but she wonders if a high schooler’s opinion matters. Esther assures R that she has an eye for such things.

When R comments that she doesn’t like the cold, E suggests that they go on vacation together to somewhere warm. R wonders why her mom is suddenly talking about a vacation, so E reveals that she has noticed that R has been taking her sleeping pills. R explains it is because she can’t sleep, but she doesn’t take it often. Esther says she understands and tells R to get a proper prescription then.

R has come to the hospital to get the prescription, and she runs into HS there. He has just come out of the psychiatrist’s room. R asks why he is coming to this hospital, and HS replies, “To try to live.” He asks her the same, and R tells him that it is her first time here and she has come because she can’t sleep.

HS points out that he and Rachel keep sharing secrets with each other. He also reveals to her that he is going to the military and he hasn’t told anyone else. R asks if HS has a girl that will wait for him while he is on military duty, and HS replies, “Well…”

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-02h19m25s253

Tan rushes to the train station where HS is waiting to go off to the military. As soon as he see HS, Tan starts yelling at HS for going off like this, suddenly and without even graduating high school. Tan wonders how HS’s parents consented to this, and HS reveals that he is going without his parents knowing; his mother should have discovered the letter now. Tan calls HS crazy, tells him to be safe, and pulls him in for a gruff hug. HS hugs him back, surprised, moved, and it finally sinking it that he is really going.

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-02h24m46s179

ES finds her mom sorting beans, and Mom reveals that she is sending the bean powder to ES’s sister. Eun Suk has texted her, saying she found a job. ES appears angry at first, asking for her number and indignant that Eun Suk didn’t anything about the money she took. But when her mom asks what ES will say to her sister, ES replies with a smile that she is going to tell her that mom and her are healthy and happy, so Eun Suk should only worry about herself. Mom asks ES if she is really happy, with a mom like her and having had such a difficult life. ES replies wholeheartedly that she is happy because she is her mother’s daughter- “I love you mom.” Mother and daughter embrace happily, but they have to break apart because ES’s phone is vibrating. ES sheepishly declares, “It’s my boyfriend.” Tan is calling ES to bring her to his father.

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-02h30m29s22

Chairman Kim is awake, talking to JS. He has heard what JS tried to do while he was in a coma. He announces that he wants to divorce her. She agrees. JS says she will prepare to take half of Jeguk and leaves. Chairman Kim orders his lawyer to prepare for divorce.

Tan comes in with ES to the hospital room. She cautiously gives Chairman Kim some books to read. He responds, without looking at her, that there is no need for her to try to look good him, but Eun Sang replies that she still wants to try. She promises that she will pay back the debt steadily so Chairman Kim should be healthy until then. Dad replies he has to live long, then. When ES says she will come back to visit him, Dad tells her she doesn’t have to. But he adds he will read the books well.

Tan and KA are walking the streets of Gangnam together like they said they would. Tan asks if there is anywhere else she wants to go, but KA reveals her legs have lost feeling. Tan chides her for wearing such high heels, but KA declares she can’t give up on high heels because she dreamed of being Miss Korea. (The actress who plays KA was actually Miss Korea.)

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-02h45m31s87

Yoon and CY have come on a father-son fishing trip. While waiting for the fish to bite. CY takes a picture of them together to send to BN, because BN said she can’t breathe if she doesn’t see CY every hour. Click!

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-03h00m25s65

CY asks Yoon if he has no plans to remarry or date, but Yoon just asks again when CY will be ready to support him instead. He talks about the difficulties of an adult life and having a job, when Won’s voice is heard, asking, “Are you talking about me?” Yoon and CY look back and are surprised to see Won and Tan standing there together.

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-03h18m24s102

CY and Tan fish, while Won and Yoon talk over coffee. When Yoon explains that he and CY came fishing because the final exams are done, Won is reminded to ask Tan about his result. Tan is all proud to report that he placed 50th, and Won is happy to hear it. See Tan’s proud face.

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-03h19m56s248

But Yoon is surprised that Won seems happy with just 50th. See Yoon’s shocked face.

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-03h20m47s31

Won asks how CY did, and Yoon rubs it in his face that CY always gets first place so he doesn’t even think about asking anymore. See the face Won gives Tan at this revelation.

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-03h17m39s165

Tan, embarrassed, gets mad at CY and scurries off. Yoon says to Won, “It would be nice if the days were always like this.” He asks Won if Tan doesn’t know yet, and Won confirms. Yoon informs him that the news report will go out tomorrow.

Poor, dear Hyun Joo. She reads the news report that Won is getting to married to Yang of BS Telecom while sitting at the bus stop. She cries quietly, hot tears falling down her face and onto her hands.

Won and HJ sit across from each other at a cafe. HJ has a smile on her face as she asks Won to keep his promise now. She takes out a wishbone and reminds him that he said he will break the bone with her when she has a wish. When Won doesn’t move, HJ designates the sides herself and breaks it. Her piece is longer so her wish will come true. She closes her eyes and silently makes her wish. When she opens them, tears have filled up to the brim. Despite her shattered heart, she bravely declares, “Let’s break up. That is my wish. Even though we sat close together, we were so far from each other. It’s not something I didn’t know, so don’t be sorry.” Still, the only thing Won can say is sorry and he does. Hyun smiles even as her voice breaks as she reminds him, “I said I would wave to you.” She holds up her hand and says, “Goodbye, oppa.”

vlcsnap-2013-12-13-03h39m58s234 vlcsnap-2013-12-13-03h40m05s52

Won comes home, and Tan starts asking him about the news and marriage. Won tells him that he is marrying because the company needs this. This is the weight of the crown he has to bear. He then brings up the deal that Tan and Won made. He doesn’t want Tan to go the U.S. though, just stay behind him, stay on his side. So Tan has to give up his dreams, he has to get business management lessons.

YD is back at the motorcycle shop. He looks into helmets, and notices the scar he has from cutting himself while washing the dishes before. A girl comes in with delivery and this reminds YD of his first meeting with ES, when she delivered. He puts on a bandaid, remembering when ES gave him one.

At MS’s studio, YS, BN, and CY play some kind of card game, so when BN loses, CY asks for a kiss on the cheek so when BN turns to do it, CY turns his face, and gets a kiss on the lips. YS wishes they break up.

Tan gets his notebook back from his teacher from the US. He has written a question asking what kind of crown Tan wanted to wear- fame, wealth or love.

Tan writes in his notebook again. “The owner of the study room has changed.” We see Won sitting in the Chairman’s study room, crying as he looks at the bone. Tan writes, “Won has reached the place he wanted, but he cries every night. Isn’t his exiled place this house he has lived his whole life?”

Tan also writes, that he has became a senior in high school, something he never thought about. Tan walks to school. Sees MS, See R but no conversation. He sees CY and BN and they tease him about his low ranking again. Tans sees YD, they just walk past each other, but both have small smiles on their faces.

Tan says nothing changed as they didn’t learn how to make up well, but ES’s voice also says that they learned…(didn’t catch this well).

Tan meets up with ES at the bench, and he talks about a party ten years from now. So they imagine a party in the future when they are 28. Everyone is there…it seems HS has come to become a director, and he invites R to the premiere, and R says she will think about it. YD is talking to MS who went to the military late, YD is doing well with Zeus. Chairman Kim is still alive. JS is also at the party, looking happy. KA is there too, so is ES’s mom. It seems ES’s mom is younger than KA!

Tan walks to his room. “Ten years from now I hope you are at the end of the road- that is the wish I made when blew out my birthday candles.” Tan finds ES in his room- they kiss.

Back to the present. Tan and ES says they hope this future comes true. They walk off holding hands. Tan narrates that at 18 they turned their back on each other so many times. Scenes of Tan and ES turning their backs to each other in the past. Letting go of each others hand. Walking away. She narrates- still at 18 we ran toward each other, held hands, and tightly embraced one another. Scenes of them hugging.

Back to Tan and ES walking on a snowy day. Tan is still talking about the meal that ES promised him. They joke and kid around. ES narrates that they might fall again, but, Tan narrates, we will keep going forward.

END.

Heirs/The Inheritors Episode 15 Recap And Screenshot

Yet another satisfying episode of Heirs/The Inheritors, though not much happened and it did get bogged down in the things least interesting such as Chairman Daddys strong arm fully coming down on Won, Tan, and Eun Sang. Hes going to manipulate everything until his entire family fractures, and he will still think hes doing the right thing. Frankly I dont care if hes the smartest man in this drama and everything he does is for the greater good of Empire Group. This drama has been skating at the edge of bare minimums of reality its hard for me to take the business dealings and corporate conflict seriously. There are other dramas for that, this one should let the kids keeping staying at the forefront and push the parents to the back. Episode 15 was really Young Dos episode to shine, and even Eun Sang stepped up big time albeit in her own limited capacity. These two also tentatively took their friendship to a comfortable mutual understanding place, even if Young Do is hurting because he really does like her. Its assuring to see him climb off his own ledge and start behaving like a decent human being. Was it Tans talking to in episode 14 or Eun Sangs friendship that brought Young Do some measure of calm so that hes not lashing out all the time like a wounded animal?

I like this new Young Do, even if a quick glance in the rear view mirror shows us the destruction he wrought in all the early episodes and nothing will atone for that other than himself making genuine amends one at a time. As a character, in many ways hes more interesting than Tan mostly because we see his change happening during the drama whereas Tans happened offscreen when he was during his US exile. Tan shines more nowadays when hes with Young Do who serves as a catalyst to bring forth stronger emotions from Tan, though I am loving their detente and even resurging bromance in this episode. The house escape scene was ridiculous yet entertaining, which at the end of the day sums up his entire drama. Im looking forward to how Tan will fight Won and his dad and how he will fight for the chance to be with Eun Sang. She was really on the backburner in this episode until the very end, but it was a scene that was worth waiting for. The way Eun Sangs face lit up without reservation when she arrived at Tans bedroom door was the very emotional candor Ive been waiting for from her since mid-way through the drama. I knew they would have to battle the world to be together, it just felt like a waste for them to fight their feelings for each other when their time is limited and they might as well enjoy it. Its here and Im primed for what comes next.

Episode 15 recap:

Heirs/The Inheritors Episode 15 Recap And Screenshot

Eun Sang announces her charity case status at Bo Na and Chan Youngs party, and when Tan is asked if he was kept in the dark, he proudly claims Eun Sang as his by taking off her apron, letting down her hair, pinning a corsage on her wrist, and kissing her on the forehead. I think this is the Tan way of saying This Girl is Mine.

Outside the party, Young Do has gone to confront Rachel with her trickery and decides to let this one slide since in the end it was Eun Sang who outed herself. Man, when did Young Do get so..thoughtful and rational? Rachel mocks the degree of his concern for Eun Sang and asks if that girl knows? Young Do clearly doesnt want her to ever know.

Heirs/The Inheritors Episode 15 Recap And Screenshot

Myung Soo comes barreling outside talking a mile a minute clearly to keep Rachel and Young Do from going inside to the kissy fest. He even asks if Rachel remembers the love letters he used to send her once a year. Some of the mean girls storm out of the party complaining about how Tan is kissing that charity case Cha Eun Sung. Myung Soo quickly takes his leave to go to the toilet and avoid the scene. Young Do looks resigned and leaves. Rachel.not so much.

Hyo Shin arrives at the party and runs into Rachel outside. She sees him and seems to have an idea. She tells him that hes just the guy she was hoping to see. As Rachel walks in, Hyo Shin gets a call from Hyun Joo chewing him out for ditching the college entrance exams and going MIA where his family is looking for him. Hyo Shin gives her the party location and tells her to come yell at him in person.

Back at the Kim household, Ki Ae sneaks up on Eun Sangs mom and then pulls her into Chairman Daddys study. Shes there to crack his safe to look for information that can be of use to her. The two moms try all the important dates in the family but cant open the safe. Eun Sangs mom gets some pencil shavings to use to dust for fingerprints which reveals the numbers that were pushed. Ki Ae sadly realizes that the combination is the birthday of Wons mother.

Ki Ae opens the safe and rifles through the contents. Her eyes widen when she alights on pictures inside an envelope. Ki Aes omomomo face is awesome.

Hyo Shin goes inside and is warmly greeted by the sane crowd of Eun Sang, Bo Na, Chan Young and Tan. They ask how he did on the exam and he says alright not explaining he skipped it.

Rachel walks in and Tan asks Chan Young to keep Eun Sang busy before walking over to speak with her. Rachel can handle his not picking her, but she cant handle him being happy. Rachels supreme bitchiness continues and if Tan hurt her, then shes going to ruin something of his. If he gets Cha Eun Sang, then shell take something away from him. Rachel walks up to Hyo Shin and kisses him, clearly intended to ruin his friendship with Tan. Er, that would only work if Tan cared even a whit about you, Rachel. Hyun Joo walks in just in time to see this kiss. Tan just snorts at the ridiculousness of it all.

Rachel ends the kiss and tells Hyo Shin she doesnt like him. Hyo Shin spots Hyun Joo and says likewise to Rachel before pulled her in for another kiss. LOL.

Everyone stares and Bo Na literally rips the tiara off her forehead in frustration that her party is ALL RUINED! Shes such a drama queen, her party is probably the talk of the school for the next month thanks to all these antics. At most shes upstaged is all.

Heirs/The Inheritors Episode 15 Recap And Screenshot

Eun Sang is staggering down the street all buzzed since Myung Soo spiked everyones drink at the party and Eun Sang drink three cups of juice. I knew this guy was good for more than just laughs. Tan tells her to stop enticing him. Shes an adorable drunk, complimenting Tan on being so so handsome. She likes him so much, the Kim Tan who only has eyes for her but is also suffering because of her.

Tan grabs her hands and realizes its very cold. He breathes on her hands to warm them as they smile at each other.

Tan gets a call and goes back to the hotel where Ki Ae waiting for him. Shes there to counsel him to apologize to Rachel and keep that engagement alive. Tan flatly refuses to keep living a life constructed by a major lie. Ki Ae sees no lie since he is the second son of the Empire Group. Tan asks if that distinction matters so much to Ki Ae, that she needs to be the mom to the second son and not just the mom to Kim Tan?

Hyo Shin is called to task by his parents for ditching the college entrance exams, but they are strangely accepting of it and even goes so far as to say Hyo Shin can go to any college and study whatever he wants for undergrad. The kicker is that hes going straight to law school afterwards. Double sigh. Thats like saying Ill punch you in the face, but not until tomorrow.

Tan goes to school the next morning and runs into Hyo Shin, who says the school is waiting to see how awkward itll be between them. Its not awkward in the least and Tan sits down to ask about the aftermath of the test ditching rebellion. Hyo Shin explains hes still on track, merely delayed until grad school. Even Tan thinks Hyo Shins living in some scary hell nightmare. Hyo Shin brings up the kissy last night and apologizes, explaining that he was trying to make a point to someone. Tan asks if that person was him? Ha, its not always about you, Tanny.

Eun Sang is in gym class and the mean girls immediately single her out, outraged that she would lie about her background and come to their elite school and steal Kim Tan. Gah, this is so juvenile and lame. Young Do saunters up and shoos them away, earning a thanks from Eun Sang for being her black knight. Young Do wonders if that means Tan is her prince charming on a white horse? If so, cant she see Young Dos got a whiter complexion? That gets Eun Sang to smile.

They walk and talk a bit and Eun Sang finally points out this is their first conversation NOT about her hidden background or Tan, and she likes it but wonders if Young Do just lacked the ability to talk about whatever he wants. She realizes hes been keeping others from bugging her by talking with her, though Young Do is all like you dont know the half of it. Young Do then gets called away.

Ji Sook sits down in her office with Won and Tan to one side and Young Do and his dad to the other. Turns out it wasnt any fighting and prompted this parent teacher conference, it was the midterm results where Young Do scored 98th and Tan 100th. Won asks if Tan scored 100th place in the nation and hears that Tan scored 100th place out of 100 students in the Empire High junior class. Won actually looks flabbergasted and turns to give Tan a wide-eyed look of disbelief. Tan pouts that he never has any middle ground.

Ki Ae says Esther needs to discuss this with her because she is Tans mother. Esther says Tans mother is Ji Sook as far as she knows. Of course Ki Ae came prepared and now the gloves are off and she whips out the pictures of Esther sucking face with Secretary Yoon. Esther was going to pass on seeing what is in the envelope but Ki Ae takes out the pictures. That pisses Esther off royally but also gets her to agree to call off the engagement. The kids are in Hyun Joos literature class and she hands out a final class group project in teams of 2-4. The selection of books are Western classics ranging from Pride and Prejudice, The Sorrows of Young Werther, Les Misérables, Anna Karenina, and The Great Gatsby. Each team is to pick a book and present a book report with a different method of analyzing it. Brainy smurf Rachel complains that all these titles were read by everyone in the class when they were younger. Hyun Joo knows that but wants the kids to read the book again now when likely their added life experiences will allow them to take away something else from it. Bo Na and Chan Young immediately form a group and Bo Na wants smart Eun Sang to join them. She agrees leaving Tan and Young Do staring at her.

His style is Eun Sang, Young Do, Suzy, and Hyuna. Tan says this is not his style either, his style is Tan and Eun Sang, Eun Sang, Eun Sang! Eun Sang accepts her fate in resignation and orders the two to watch the movie version of their book while shell read the actual text since that is as much as she can expect from them. She slides one half of an ear piece into each of their ears and tells them to start watching and shell keep an eye on them. She tells them not to fight and co-exist peacefully for this time period.

Two men in black stride into the cafe and they are here on orders of Chairman Daddy to bring Tan home. Young Do snarks at how Empire Group does things. The guards say they are ordered to use force if Tan wont come. Young Do offers to use his taekwondo now if Tan asked for help. Tan says no need and tells Young Do not to flirt with Eun Sang while hes gone. Tan goes with them leaving Eun Sang looking at him worriedly. Eun Sang spots the guards outside the front gate and Young Do points out that Tan is being locked up now and Eun Sang wont be seeing him even if they live under the same roof. He orders Ji Sook to find a rich girl to get engaged to Won and then tells her to get ready to sign divorce papers if she dares to use her shares to back Won in any way. Ki Ae sniggers until Chairman Daddy coldly tells Ki Ae to get out of the house if she keeps raising Tan like this. He tells Secretary Yoon to submit his resignation for not stopping this or being on his side. Won fired everyone on Chairman Daddys side but kept Secretary Yoon, which means he was not taking anyones side. But that has come to an end. Tan tells Young Do to buy more shares of Empire. Tan asks Young Do to help him escape, and part of me thinks Young Do was just WAITING for all these years for Tan to ask him for help. Dad says anything can happen to Won, he can get in an accident or go to jail, and he needs an Heir. Dad claims hes doing this for the greater good of the company and the family. Tan asks if all this in-fighting is to keep the peace in the family for the long run? Tan cries that from now on Won will never be family with his mom, and from now on dad is not his family anymore. His dad says this is merely the weight of the crown that Tan has to bear.

Eun Sang walks up the stairs like shes made up her mind. She pauses outside Tans bedroom and knocks. He opens the door and is surprised to see her. She shushes him with a finger to the lips and then breaks into a beaming smile.

Thoughts of Mine:

This episode wasnt nearly as zippy as the last two, but it continues to showcase some fun school scenes that make it all worthwhile. Tan and Young Dos gradual resurrection of their friendship felt like it arrived without a big making up scene, but then I felt like one wasnt needed. Tan was never that angry with Young Do, and the moment the latter stopped being an antagonistic ass they could easily fall back into their comfortable banter and mutual understanding. I suppose the arrival of evil dad and Won at the school for the parent teacher conference was a stark reminder that they have very difficult family situations and perhaps their friendship is the lesser of two evils at present. The scenes where they are washing the windows or watching Eun Sang instead of the book report movie are the bits of throwaway amusing interludes I actually want more of in this drama. Eun Sangs matter of fact behavior with Young Do was also nice to watch, showing us that this drama doesnt have to be all intense crazy emotions and heightened melodrama. Rachel and Hyo Shin took over the what the hell? crown in this episode, though shes way more gone than he is. That she would kiss Hyo Shin to try and ruin his friendship with Tan is both bizarrely nonsensical as well as just lame. That he would kiss her back again to make Hyun Joo jealous is equally as pointless, though hes dealing with lots of stress so Ill give him a pass. Rachels tears over her broken engagement was laughable as well, because if she genuinely liked Tan is debatable but even giving her the benefit of the doubt she sure has a no-means-yes way of showing it. I wish the drama did something with the Won-Hyun Joo relationship other than as a fly by mention with zero emotional heft. Its a giant waste of a plot line not to mention it renders Hyo Shins crush on Hyun Joo just as ineffectual. Its like those three are staging a mime performance off to the side of the stage without a script.

Heirs/The Inheritors Episode 15 Recap And Screenshot

This episode had too much Chairman Daddy, and also kept Tan and Eun Sang away from each other for much too long. At least it jump started the corporate battle for Empire Group, what with the outing of Tans illegitimacy as well as the transfer of shares that has been discussed for so long. Chairman Daddy is intense and scary like we expected, and the choice he gave Eun Sang at the end is way more dire than the usual take money and leave my son cash toss. Im guessing Eun Sangs choice is the latter, spend time now with Tan and get exiled forevermore. I doubt the Chairman will sell her into prostitution or anything horrible like that, more like he might send her to a developing country with limited funds and a second tier school. I wonder how the parents always think they know what is best, when there is still so long a road for the kids to walk until major life decisions need to be made. Its not like Tan is marrying Eun Sang tomorrow, and whats wrong with them dating for now? I guess the idea is not to give Tan any opportunity to have something that comforts him, because this rich world needs to have its leaders be cold and ruthless people. But its nice to see that some of the kids are showing kid emotions in this episode, with Rachels acting out and tears, Hyo Shins resignation, and Young Dos playful assistance. I wonder if the ending is all the kids rising up like Children of the Corn and staging a coup and removing their parents and becoming the rulers rather than the heirs. LOL, Im just joking of course, but I think weve got a pickle in our hands for Tan and Eun Sang and its time to see if they have the guts, brains, and fortitude to fight for what they want. It might not be a lifetime of a promise, but at least they deserve to have the now be with each other. Sadly Young Do doesnt have his own Eun Sang-esque safe harbor like Tan found, and perhaps his happiness will have to come in another story in another drama.

Heirs/The Inheritors Episode 8 Recap And Screenshot

That’s it, I’m over the sliver of hope that Heirs/The Inheritors will get better. Or even having a semblance of a drama with a beating heart, all tension and material events happening and a steady forward momentum. This is what weve been given, and Ive decided to stick with it but wont hesitate to have a little more fun recapping the hemming and hawing flow. What a major missed opportunity for everyone involved. A Kim Eun Seok high school drama turned out to be a pale washed out version of the things that made her works so effervescent at times, the witty dialogue and situations watered down to tepidness. Yet she crafted so much to dislike about her world, from the vast swath of horrible rich people with all their magnified non-issues, to a leading lady that personifies Candy plus all the doormat qualities of restraint, denial, and evasion. I neither hate nor love Heirs, but without either strong emotion watching this drama becomes a twice a week appointment with nothing compelling to look forward to, but not so terrible I want to call it quits. I’m having some fun upping the snark, and really there was so much room for it earlier but I refrained with the hopes that it would stop.

I cant believe the pink lipstick craziness has continued with every single character wearing the exact same shade of pink lipstick, guys and girls included. Then everyone has visible under eye redness, which makes me wonder if it’s a new make up technique being pioneered in Korea? Tan’s outfits range from bizarrely hilarious to fugly, and Eun Sang spends 90% of every episode with a combination constipated and scared face. She sometimes even has the same face with either Tan and Young Do, despite the guys being night and day when they interact with her. You know what the worst part is? The worst part is that I actually can see through all this crap characterization and shoddy execution and understand what the story intends to tell and like it. I like Tan, I like his loneliness, I like that he likes Eun Sang because she’s a positive presence in his life with no strings attached, I like his half-smooth/half-awkward way around her. I love high school themed dramas normally but this one hasn’t even tried to show anything related to their school life other than hallway and cafeteria bullying. Eight episodes in and still nothing substantive has happened with anyone. At least Boys Before Flowers was so bad it was entertaining, Heirs is just there. With a lot of young and pretty people in the cast, and a narrative heart so hard to find I’m burrowing like a gopher digging my way to the center of the earth looking for the core of why I should care.

Episode 8 recap:

Tan is agitated that Eun Sang went to Young Do’s hotel to see him, and worried about what the future might hold. He gives Eun Sang two choices – to move out of his house (i.e. leave his scary world) or like him back because he’s already liking her. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt of being a teenager that you don’t know how to confess, Tan, because both those choices suck. Neither are a legit choice, geddit?

Eun Sang doesn’t want to answer, and I just want to shake her because being pretending to be mute and or stupid does not make Tans confession not exist. Tan says it again “I like you”, and at least that type of sincere direct confession I can get behind. But then he goes and says that he will actively interfere in her life and invade her privacy from now on. Grrrr, what a way to ruin the moment.

Heirs/The Inheritors Episode 8 Recap And Screenshot

Eun Sang answers the phone which is when Tan kisses her into silence.

Thoughts of Mine:

Can I just make fun of this kiss and get it out of the way first? Because what incompetent PD would end the episode literally 3 seconds after the kiss on a freeze frame of Eun Sang looking frightened out of her wits. Poor Park Shin Hye will need some major hot kissing in the rest of the drama to live this one down, and honestly I can see she’s just acting like the PD told her to. Look scared and stunned and forget deer in headlights shut your eyes tight! I get the context but the execution is all wrong. For 8 episodes Eun Sang and Tan have been doing a very tentative yet pretty straight forward dance of interest. He hasn’t been shy from the beginning, and recently upped it all by pursuing her outright prefaced by as clear a confession as it can get. I like you. Do you like me? Could you like me? Eun Sang hasn’t said “no, get the fuck away from me”, she’s done the silly thing of trying to ignore him as if hoping that will make things go away. But then not really ignoring him, because she does like spending time with him. Just not all the time, and some times more than others. It’s all so confusing, thankfully Tan bypasses all the mixed signals and just keeps going. Not that I think he has a right to, but she could do better with being as direct with him as he’s been with her. Clearly she likes him back but doesn’t want to and doesn’t think she’s allowed to. Usual poor girl falls in love with rich guy angst. But the kiss? However freaked out she was by the confrontation with Young Do in the cafeteria, could her body language have been less of a frozen stiff and more just taken off guard? I would rather the drama have no kissing if we get kisses like this.

Heirs/The Inheritors Episode 8 Recap And Screenshot

The horrible human being characters in this K-drama continue to show up and bedevil me with their unwelcome presence. Seeing bad people in a drama usually means building up to their comeuppance which is supposed to give us great glee. See them suffer in the end like they heaped suffering on others. Here I don’t having a flying fig what happens to people like the parents in the Kim family, Young Do’s dad and Rachel’s mom, and I especially don’t care what happens to Young Do and Rachel. They are just terribly written characters masquerading with a shred of inner pain but their actions don’t provide them the justification so that the audience can give them the benefit of the doubt. Their redemption or inevitable downfall matters not because they have no credible presence as three dimensional characters. It hurts that all we ever see of them is when they are plotting something or looking resentful. That’s true of all the characters in this drama aside from Eun Sang and Tan, their screen time is devoid of any personal value and instead they function to move forward other plot lines. If I jump ahead to episode 20, what is the final grand resolution or happy ending we can expect? Remember most of these characters are teens in high school. Tan and Won make up, with Won realizing their company is big enough to divide up between then and still have leftovers to run a small island nation? Tan and Eun Sang get the green light to date? Hyun Joo lets Won sleep over and Chairman Daddy lets him marry her? Rachel finds a rich boyfriend who loves her and unthaws her frozen ass? Young Do finds his own poor girl Eun Sang to heal his lonely heart? Bo Na and Chan Young date through college and realize how lucky they were to find compatible opposites attract in each other? The unholy marriage of Zeus and RS International goes through, or not, who cares? Hyo Shin stops puking and maybe gets a life outside of being hot for teacher? Myung Soo stops clubbing? Does seeing any of that make us feel satisfied? Aside from Tan maybe being less miserable with his family, right now nothing I can see down the road has been crafted to make me care when we get there.

Heirs/The Inheritors Episode 8 Recap And Screenshot

I can say now that at least the chemistry is good in this drama, good without anything being great. Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye both could have done an adult drama together and that would’ve tried their talents more and be better served. They have this oddball tension where it’s playful without being sexual, self-aware without being coquettish. It’s like they know their fans have been wanting them to do a drama together and they are trying their best, but it’s acting in a fish bowl with the sensation of being watched. Lee Min Ho and Kim Woo Bin are doing their best to sell the former best friends antagonism and rivalry, but I need to care about both characters to wish for some sort of resolution. Right now I wish Young Do right off a cliff. Choi Jin Hyuk and Im Joo Eun are the most wasted so far, IMO, with their relationship being completely underdeveloped and their characters one-note. Won is just an uptight prick and a needy boy all rolled into one, and there is no context around Hyun Joo so I have nothing to go on with her. I don’t know if Won and her are true love that must overcome evil Chairman Daddy. At least I have something to go on with respect to Eun Sang and Tan. The drama has shown me why he likes her, what she brings to his life, what he brings to her life, and why I should care if they get a chance to make it work. Everyone else can go pound sand, especially Young Do.

2013, ockoala.

Heirs/The Inheritors Episode 18 Recap And Screenshot

This was the strangest episode of Heirs/The Inheritors to date. Compared to yesterdays slow as molasses, filler-heavy flashback scenes, and emotional overkill with nothing substantive happening, this episode 18 was a veritable dump truck full of action. Thats good, right? I asked for that, right? Yeah I did, so Im not going to complain about things happening finally other than to point out that nothing made sense. Its like people suddenly just did things and there were no consequences which kept them from doing it earlier. I cant explain so you have to just watch. The crux of the matter is that Tan and Eun Sangs obstacles to being together are exactly the same as its always been (Chairman Daddy), except in the span of mere minutes Eun Sang went from no, I cant be with Tan to being what the heck, Ill take it a day at a time with him. The brain part of my head hurts a lot thanks to Eun Sangs whiplash decision making, which is actually pretty consistent since she really is that girl who says no but really wants to say yes. I think shes going to fall towards the bottom of the barrel in terms of the pantheon of Kim Eun Sook leading lady characters after all. She comes across like she will say or do whatever based on the story need at that moment.

Tan needs to have a breakdown? Eun Sang decides Chairman Daddy is a genuine threat and leaves. Tan needs to get his act together? Eun Sang decides shell go right back to him because. I dont have an answer to the second part of the because since I dont think even she knows. On the upside this was a much more entertaining episode, with once again Young Do shining like the sole relatable character left in the main bunch. If his story ends here, I would actually feel satisfied because I saw him grow and change, and in the end he actually got to relieve the most painful experience in his life in losing his mom and actually get closure. Then he proceeds to let Eun Sang go with jaunty honesty and walk away with his heart hurting and his head held high. It doesnt negate his sheer awfulness in the early episodes, which always felt like Kim Eun Sook piling on to make his character as terrible as possible, but at least I felt like his character had a well-traveled journey before out eyes. Tan? I honestly dunno. A guy who spends episodes moping and pining for a girl, no matter how rich and handsome he is, how devoted and cool he can be, in the end Tan just comes across like a clueless kid with no greater capacity to take control of his life. Hes all talk and even now the return of Eun Sang is something he didnt bring about but others made happen. If hes going to win me back on his ship, hes going to have to step up majorly in the last two episodes.

Heirs/The Inheritors Episode 18 Recap And ScreenshotHeirs/The Inheritors Episode 18 Recap And Screenshot

Tan arrives at the party to a gathered media. He opens Eun Sangs car door and she steps out. They stand face-to-face as the cameras all go off. He asks if shes nervous and she is a little. He tells her that it will get harder but they just have to go forward.

Thoughts of Mine:

Let me just ask whether anyone has a logical explanation for why Eun Sang did her sudden about turn mid-way through the episode. Mind you, this came after she was just chewed out yet again by Chairman Daddy for being a shameless hussy and she kept insisting she wont see Tan anymore. Then one talk with Won and shes like okay, back to square one we go! My problem with this is that Eun Sang sorta did it already when she tried to be with Tan a few episodes ago and Chairman Daddy then gave her the ultimatum. The same threat is still on the table, so was Wons implied assistance all she needed to get up the courage to breach all obstacles to be with Tan? That feels like such a random reason, not to mention this whole drama is headed towards a cop-out ending if ever I see one. Chairman Daddy has been a fire-breathing dragon all drama long and I see him either getting sick to the point of suddenly becoming a decent human being since he doesnt have much time left, or even worse deciding to just let go of his machinations and see where the deck falls when his two sons have to handle things on their own. This whole thing is just one big puppet dance for a man who has money and control issues. His conversation with Ki Ae was heartbreaking and absolutely the one emotional moment in this whole episode that really made an impact. All of Tan and Eun Sangs moping was frankly beyond repetitive to the point of me being desensitized to it now. Ki Ae and her suffering finally gets some airtime and Im thrilled she chose to stand up for herself after being so thoroughly debased. That Tan continues to stand up for his mom to his dad is one of the things I still like about him despite most of his personality going into the dumpster once Eun Sang left and he fell apart. At the grand ole age of 18 hes already hit bottom because of a girl? Puhlease.

Heirs/The Inheritors Episode 18 Recap And Screenshot

I always thought Young Do was interesting but due to Tans descent into love-focused self-absorption it was Young Do that seized the opportunity to win my affection. Hes still got to atone for his sociopathic past but at least hes taken the first steps towards being a self-aware human being. Every scene with him in this episode was wonderful. His meal with Eun Sangs mom was lovely, his noodle break up with Eun Sang was absolutely perfect, and the redux of the scene with the leaving mom looking for her son was the one repeat scene in this drama that felt moving rather than pointless. This episode magically allowed Tan and Eun Sang to be together, but it also sensibly moved Young Do along in how own personal journey. Even Rachel seems to have returned to her haughty but sane self, while Bo Na and Chan Young have firmly been placed into easy to watch friend scene status any much story of their own to ever share. I cant even discuss the inexplicable bed scene with Won and Hyun Joo not to mention their lame conversation. No wonder their romance, or lack thereof, in this drama has been such a chemistry drain. These two cant even show each other their love, much less show the audience. If they get their magical happy ending at the end of episode 20, it would feel like watching strangers wander on set to kiss and get married without any context. At the end of the day, Heirs its heading into its finale week primed for lots of happily ever afters and no tension left to milk. I still dont know what the whole point of the story was, other than to assemble a big pretty cast to shill lots of product placements, which was out of control in this episode with the Kakao talk, the cell phone features, the mango drinks, it was everywhere. There were times this drama showed nuggets of sincerity in every episode but its always buried under the excess. I hope the ending at least ups the genuine satisfaction level so I can walk away feeling decently entertained through a long drama ride.
