Weekly Recap: A tragic loss, GG with GG, and controversy that "rang a bell"

This weeks seems to have been a particularly busy one with countless girl group comebacks, controversies, and more! Read on to find out exactly what happened this week!

A tragic passing

The Korean entertainment industry experienced a tragic loss recently with the death veteran of actress Han Kyung Sun. In what can only be considered a series of unfortunate events, the actress was reported to have lost consciousness on June 30 after having a meal with the staff of her daily drama. The actress was taken to the ICU and was diagnosed with cerebral infarction which caused her to suffer a stroke. She passed away painlessly and peacefully on July 4 at midnight, after being in a critical condition for several days. Her vigil was held at Seoul St. Mary"s Hospital, and her funeral procession was this past July 6. Our hearts go out to all the people who held Han Kyung Sun near and dear to their hearts and hope that the actress is in a better place.

Luhan keeping busy in China

Luhan"s popularity in China managed to shock Hollywood A-list celeb Matt Damon! The "Bourne" actor who recently wrapped up filming a US-China joint movie "The Great Wall" with the singer, expressed his astonishment at Luhan"s popularity in China as he told the audience at "The Great Wall" press conference, "I think the first night where we started shooting there was something like 400 flower arrangements that came to the hotel and took up the entire hallway."

Luhan has not only been keeping busy with filming but he has also been productive by rubbing shoulders with artists in China! The singer released a song with David Tao called "Please Come to the Great Wall to Ski," which will be the theme song to China"s 2022 Winter Olympics.

T-ara"s Jiyeon and Lee Dong Gun a hot new item?

The Korean entertainment world has been rampant with dating news and it looks like T-ara"s Jiyeon and actor Lee Dong Gun have joined the ranks of new celeb couples! It was reported that the two became interested in each other after filming a Korean-Chinese joint production. Both Lee Dong Gun and Jiyeon"s agencies confirmed that the two are indeed dating. The singer opened up about her budding relationship with the actor as she told the reporters on the July 7 airing of "The Show Season 4," "It still hasn"t hit me, and I really don"t know."As for her fans, she commented, "Fans are people who always give me strength. This is the beginning if our relationship, so I"ll be thankful if you look upon us kindly. I"ll work harder as well." Jiyeon even took to her fan cafe to write a heartfelt message to her fans. She asked them to "watch over us and cheer us on," and promised that she will work ever harder to return their love.

This month is GG with GG

Girls Day has reportedly nailed the Running Horse Choreo in the music video designed for the song called Ring My Bell

Girls Day Rocks Running Horse Choreo in Ring My Bell MV Girls Day has dropped the music video for title track Ring My Bell off of their second full-length album LOVE.

According to the Girls Day members at their showcase on July 6, Ring My Bell tells the story of the kind of blithe love that makes a bell go off when you see a guy you like.

These days, it seems a dance hook is just as important as a musical hook to the success of a pop song, and Girls Days new music video has both. On their unique dance hook, member Minah comments, In the first refrain, theres choreography where we act like were riding on a horse while doing the dog leg dance. Since dog leg dance isnt the prettiest name, I think we will have to make up another one. I guess we can combine run with horse to call it running horse dance.

Check out the music video and share with us your thoughts!

Death and Destruction on “Angry Mom” Episode 14

Death and Destruction on “Angry Mom” Episode 14

Wow. “Angry Mom” has always been remarkable for how dark it’s willing to be, but episode 14 raises the bar yet again. Kang Ja (Kim Hee Sun) spends most of the episode firm in her resolve to run away, convinced that she can only protect the people she cares about by leaving Korea. But after tragedy strikes, Kang Ja—along with all of our main players—has to decide just where she stands, and what she’s prepared to lose, in order to see this fight to the end.

These were my five favorite scenes from “Angry Mom” episode 14:

1. Sang Tae feels betrayed What I love about Sang Tae (come to think of it, I also love this about Bok Dong!) is that he has the ability to be ridiculous and pathetic at the same time. His anger and sadness at Ah Ran (Kim Yoo Jung) leaving Korea are rooted in serious loneliness and fear of abandonment, which is heartbreaking. But the way that he expresses those emotions is just endearingly silly, from his hesitant “Aren’t we… dating?” to his bravado-filled “Fine! Go ahead! Leave me!” (I also really appreciated how bluntly Ah Ran reminded Sang Tae that it was his father’s fault she was leaving in the first place!)

2. “Long-distance dad” Jin Sang is a tough character, because he’s always felt impermanent. From the minute he appeared on screen, I assumed that he and Kang Ja wouldn’t still be together by the time “Angry Mom” finished, because she so clearly didn’t love him. I never once wavered in that conviction. I never hated him (he struck me as weak and foolish, but never malicious), but I was certain that he and his champion whiner of a mother would part ways with Kang Ja and Ah Ran sooner or later.

In light of that, I was surprised by how emotional Jin Sang’s final letter to Kang Ja made me. It’s not sweepingly romantic, but it is tremendously earnest. Move away, he tells his wife, and wait for me. I’ll follow you. It’s a wonderfully simple way of reaffirming his commitment to their marriage, in the same way that his sign-off (“long-distance dad”) is a reaffirmation of his very real kinship with Ah Ran.

3. “I wasn’t even able to say thank you.” Okay, so after Jin Sang’s note and his heroic determination to try to fix the crumbling building from inside, it didn’t take a genius to figure out that he wasn’t long for this world. But his death still hurts. It hurt even more to see him being mourned alongside the students who died—the pure senselessness of the loss just came crashing home. These kids, this man… the idea that they died because a few rich people needed to be that much richer is simply unbearable. (I admit it, I was in tears all through this scene. I found it very difficult to watch.)

4. “He’ll wake up.” HE’D BETTER. If Bok Dong (Ji Soo) doesn’t emerge from this coma in perfect health, I will be very upset.

5. Yi Kyung’s mother joins the fight I didn’t know I needed this to happen until it did. The struggle is coming full-circle, as Yi Kyung’s mother finally decides to take down Do Jung Woo—and immediately captures him saying some pretty incriminating things about the school collapse on camera. Symbolically, it feels important that Yi Kyung’s mother is a part of this final confrontation—and what an added bonus that she’s skilled in the art of collecting evidence! I am so ready for the coming showdown.
