[Recap] Weekly Roundup Special Celebrity Couple Edition

[Recap]Weekly Roundup – Special Celebrity Couple EditionAll the important Korean Entertainment news from this week in one place: This is your weekly Soompi RecapSpecial Celebrity Couple Edition!

Its never a dull day in the K-Pop world and this week offered plenty for our eyes and ears. There may not have been many music video releases or drama news but the Korean entertainment industry more than made up for it with an onslaught of dating gossip. This week was full of rumors, dating scandals, convicting photographs, netizen accusations, and the occasional on-air confession.

With all of that, there must also be the official statements of the agencies. Those poor agencies. Theyre just trying to manage their artists and make a little money, but then those darn celebrities have to cause a ruckus by doing things like holding hands or wearing the same sweater. Then the agency is put on the spot and demanded of an official statement.

Sometimes the official statements are simple and straightforward, but usually they are just poorly put together lies that dont always make things better. Lets take a look at the scandals of this week and see how the agencies responded.

[Recap]Weekly Roundup – Special Celebrity Couple Edition

Scandal 1: Kim Jaejoong is photographed at a club whispering into a womans ears. Is this pretty non-celebrity woman his girlfriend?

The official statement: After confirming, the girl in question is actually his older sister. Jaejoong spent the Chuseok holiday with his family.  (Because thats what families do. They go to a club together. Nothing strengthens a familys bond more than over priced drinks, loud techno music, and people grinding up on each other on the dance floor.) What they should have said: Because of the loud music Jaejoong was actually discreetly letting the woman know that a man had poured something suspicious in her drink and to be careful. It turns out that he was right, and in her gratefulness the woman told him that she would name all her future offspring after him and the other members of JYJ. Scandal 2: It all started with Kim Woo Bin announcing that he is dating the fashion model Yoo Ji Ahn. At first, fans were generally supportive until a fan put up a picture of Yoo Ji Ahn wearing a sweater that the fan gave Kim Woo Bin as a present. The fan was naturally upset because it was an expensive limited edition sweater.

The official statement: “It is true that a certain fan gifted Kim Woo Bin with a Balmain sweater. But after receiving the gift, Kim Woo Bin bought the same sweater and gave it to his girlfriend. So there are two separate Balmain sweaters involved. Even if she is his girlfriend, Kim Woo Bin would never be able to give a precious gift from a fan to her. That is not the case.” (Because that is what boyfriends do. They receive a gift and then buy their girlfriends a similar one, even if its a sweater that is clearly too big for her.) What they should have said: Kim Woo Bin accidentally spilled coffee on his girlfriend that day and gave her the sweater off his back to cover her up. Since it was his most favorite sweater ever, she returned it to him the next day after having it dry cleaned because nothing, nothing, is more precious than a gift from a fan.  [Recap]Weekly Roundup – Special Celebrity Couple Edition

Scandal 3: T-aras So Yeon is dating former idol, Oh Jong Hyuk. For you young ones, Oh Jong Hyuk was part of Click-B, the original idol boy band. He was a pretty boy back then but now hes super hot. They were photographed sitting together at a coffee shop.

The official statement:  “Both Oh Jong Hyuk and So Yeon’s families know of their relationship. Since they started the relationship having marriage in mind, please kindly watch over their relationship.” What they should have said: And this has nothing to do with T-aras comeback thats going to happen really soon. Nothing, I swear. Purely coincidence. Were not going to hide the fact that So Yeon is dating someone really hot. Were not like the other agencies; were a cool agency.  [Recap]Weekly Roundup – Special Celebrity Couple Edition

Scandal 4: Actor Jung Kyung Ho revealed on a radio program that he is currently dating someone.

The official statement: “We just heard about his confession last night on a radio program and are currently surprised. He met her a year ago and they are having a good relationship.” What they should have said: He said what on the radio? Hes dating someone? I mean, yeah, we totally knew that. We totally planned that.  [Recap]Weekly Roundup – Special Celebrity Couple Edition

Scandal 5: f(x)s Sulli and Dynamic Duos Choiza took a stroll together in the morning and was caught in photos and a video. You know it is legit when theres also a video. The two were holding hands and looking very happy. It was surprising but not too scandalous until more photos showed that Sulli was wearing the exact same outfit the night before when the two were drinking beer together.

The official statement: We have confirmed that the two have a close brother and younger sister relationship and frequently keep in touch, but they are nothing more than that. The two were holding hands as friends.”  What they should have said: Sulli is a young woman who has come of age and is capable of making her own decision on what she does with her time and who she spends it with. Ha! Who are we kidding? There is no way the public would accept this relationship so were going to deny everything to do what little we can to protect our artists.  [Recap]Weekly Roundup – Special Celebrity Couple Edition

Scandal 6: An ullzzang left a cryptic message that reads LI Miss You Myungsoo. Netizens are quick to find photos of the ullzang wearing the same things as Infinites L. Does this mean that she is dating L?

The official statement:  “L and “L and Kim Do Yeon met through a mutual friend and they became close friends. However, they aren’t dating.” met through a mutual friend and they became close friends. However, they aren’t dating.” What they should have said: Owning the same bracelet and sneakers as an idol does not mean that you are dating them. If this was true, every idol would be dating thousands of their fans. Thanks for the exposure though. We just released a music video and were wrapping up our world tour. Infinite, fighting!

What else happened this week?

TV Guide [Drama Edition]: KBSs Oohlala CoupleEp. 03

[Note- in order to avoid confusion, I'm going to call the characters by their names, not by the names of the bodies they're inhabiting- i.e. Yeo Ok is Yeo Ok, even if she's in Soo Nam's body.]

We start with the day Sayuri dies.Soo Nam holds her dead body and says that, had he known how things would end, he would have never loved her at all.Her spirit (unheard by him) responds:

“Don’t be in pain.I have no regrets. How many people in the world love someone enough to put their life on the line?Without you, my life would have been empty.I am happy.”

He finds a note tucked in her kimono- the one she read before killing herself. As he reads the last line about living happily as husband and wife, he drops her and jumps back. Her spirit continues on, telling him “Come quickly, I’m waiting for you“.Ahh, so *she* wrote that letter! He says he’s sorry- he can’t go now.He wants to, but he has many things to do.He needs to help save the country. He explains that he must die for his country, not for love.Sayuri’s spirit looks on in shock, saying she can’t forgive him for that. She tries to beat him, but her ghost arms go right through him.The wind from her sleeves sends the letter flying out the window.

In the present, Soo Nam and Yeo Ok try to figure out how to switch back to their original bodies.Soo Nam insists that the tree they hit must have caused the switch, and convinces Yeo Ok to repeatedly run into the tree, head-first, with him.It doesn’t do any good.

The next day, Yeo Ok has to go to work in Soo Nam’s place. She freaks out- she’s never been to the hotel before, she doesn’t know anyone, she doesn’t know her way around, and she’s sure she can’t do it.Soo Nam gives her a quick rundown in the car, and tells her that all she has to do is go to a meeting, deliver a message about the English guests, and then go home. He’s made an appointment for the two of them to meet a monk who’s an expert in controlling souls, and they can see him after work.

She does her best, but things start going wrong the minute she enters the hotel and sees Victoria- Soo Nam had told her she wasn’t an employee!Victoria follows Yeo Ok to the office, going on about how worried she was about Soo Nam the night before, and then asks about divorce court, thrilled when Yeo Ok answers, “Your wish came true”.In her mind, Yeo Ok thinks about how Victoria won’t feel so lucky once she’s stuck being the housewife.  She goes to her meeting, where she manages to insult the wrong person and accidentally call the English guests American.Afterwards, Soo Nam rips into her for messing up, but she answers that “they all look the same anyway!”He keeps yelling at her, so she dishes it right back- he didn’t tell her about Victoria! He makes a comment about Victoria being “a patient”, but Yeo Ok brushes it off and he doesn’t elaborate.

They visit the monk, who explains that the accident affected both their bodies and souls.Their souls were flung out of their bodies, but were so discombobulated that they got lost coming back, and wound up in the wrong bodies.A man’s wife and mistress swapped bodies five years before, and he tried to put them back, but they couldn’t handle the treatment and failed.“Even if it’s so painful that you can’t even breathe, you must put up with it.”The monk starts their treatment by pelting them with handfuls of dry beans. When his arms wear out, he loads the beans in a machine that shoots the beans at Soo Nam and Yeo Ok.

At home, Soo Nam attempts to teach Yeo Ok the ins and outs of the hotel. She says that she still won’t be able to run it.He says that she keeps claiming to be smart- she reminds him that he says she’s ignorant and incompetent. He suggests she get help from Victoria while she’s working, but she refuses to seek help from his mistress. He changes tactics, saying that if she ruins this opportunity, he’ll change everything back to his name before they switch back, leaving her penniless.

TV Guide [Drama Edition]: KBSs Oohlala CoupleEp. 03

Later, Yeo Ok gives him a heartfelt confession about her state of emotions and what she has been experiencing. Soo Nam says he’s sorry, but Yeo Ok isn’t hearing it- “If you’re sorry, switch us back!”

That night, when they’re getting ready to sleep, Soo Nam suggests that they take the monk’s most recent advice to “create a way for their souls to interact” by sleeping together.Yeo Ok is completely repulsed, shoving him off the bed several times.

The next day, Soo Nam’s mom sits next to Yeo Ok, thinking her son is asleep.Earlier, she’d tried to throw Yeo Ok out of the house, but Yeo Ok had convinced her to let her stay until the divorce was finalized.Mrs. Go wonders out loud about how hard it must be to have a wife that’s having an affair.Yeo Ok, in Soo Nam’s body, sits up, singing her own praises and asks Mrs. Go to stop judging her so harshly and be nicer before rushing out of the room.

At the hotel, Yeo Ok gets a call from “woman”.When she answers and it’s Soo Nam, she realizes that that is how she is programmed into his contacts list. She freaks out- she’s not honey, sweetie, or wife?Just “woman”?She starts crying and hangs up, deciding she won’t help him anymore.

She goes out to the lobby, where she sees a man.In her head, she says, “Oppa…” and then walks over to hug him.The staff and guests stare at the two men embracing as the episode ends.

contagion’s Thoughts:

[ Note : This post reflects the opinions of the author, not necessarily those of ohkpop ]

So maybe the past-life romance wasn’t as perfect as we’ve been led to believe so far?Could Yeo Ok unknowingly be holding a grudge against Soo Nam for not dying with her in their last life? And Victoria’s definitely sick? And who is “oppa”?So many questions!

I’m starting to miss Yeo Ok’s take-charge personality. While I totally understand why she would be freaking out right now, I hope that she starts to get her confidence back soon.Even scared, though, she’s quite the force to be reckoned with, and I still love her to death.

I do hope the actors settle into their roles a little better, as right now the body swap isn’t quite believable- for example, we never saw Yeo Ok flutter her eyelashes and whine when she was in her own body, so why would she do so in her husband’s body? That said, there are lots of little things that I do appreciate- Soo Nam not knowing what to do with his hair and being annoyed by his bangs amuses me to no end.

So far, I’m still impressed with the story and excited to see where it goes, but I have one major complaint- can our main couple please, please, PLEASE stop hitting each other all the time? There are ways to portray without resorting to spousal violence. It actually took away from the humor most of the time, even though we were supposed to think it was funny.

Speaking of funny, I’ll leave you with this- in my opinion, Moo San’s “Shake, shake, shake… everybody!” entrance was the funniest moment of the show so far.We need more Moo San!

Recap of Ep. 2:

Another rather intense episode, considering how this is supposed to be a comedy…

TV Guide [Drama Edition]: KBS2TVs Oohlala CoupleEp. 02

Episode two backtracks a little – we see Yeo Ok having the hidden cameras installed at the apartment when she’s interrupted by a call from her son Gi Chan‘s school – he hasn’t been to class for several days. She hurries over to the PC bang and spanks him in front of the other patrons. She takes him home and stares at him while he studies English.Il Ran comes in the room to say that Soo Nam will be staying late at work- we all know what that means.Gi Chan keeps yelling at Yeo Ok to leave, and she finally snaps and starts hitting him. He starts crying and Il Ran separates the two, taking him out of the room.

We catch up to the point where Soo Nam sees the video of himself and Victoria in bed.He ejects the disc, breaks it, and throws it down, calling Yeo Ok stupid and insinuating that she’s all talk. She asks why he’s so mean to her and nice to Victoria, going on to say that men never mature or become adults – they just fool around, lie, and treat life like a game. She demands a divorce immediately – if he doesn’t give it to her, she’s showing the video to his boss and his mom.

He laughs at her until she reveals that she’s actually already sent a video to his boss – now it’s her turn to laugh. He beats feet out of there to intercept the package, while she simultaneously laughs and cries.Soo Nam makes it to the hotel just in time to get the package, which Victoria was unknowingly delivering. She’s suspicious, but he tries to pass it off like it’s nothing.

In Baek Ho‘s office, Baek Ho, Ae Sook, Soo Nam, and Yeo Ok have a meeting.Ae Sook demands to know why the men cheated, and Baek Ho insists that’s just how men are. He unsuccessfully tries to blame the wives, and then tries to shift the attention to Soo Nam.Yeo Ok explains that she can never get the image of Soo Nam cheating out of her mind, and she can’t go on living with him after seeing that.Baek Ho cuts in to suggest she wait until Soo Nam gets his promotion, but she refuses- she’ll keep his secret until he gets his job, but they’re getting a divorce now.Cut to divorce court- the marriage is over.

The two walk out in somber silence, watching a line of husbands and wives screaming, fighting, crying, and begging with each other outside the courtroom.Outside, Moo San appears next to a security guard (the same guy from the street food tent in episode one), whining that if Yeo Ok and Soo Nam knew what they’d been like in their previous lives, they wouldn’t be acting like this.

The man tells Moo San that the whole thing was her fault- she should have just left him alone and not let him fall in love with another woman.Moo San says that “she’s not just any woman! She was his wife in his past life. She was sent far away to Sweden as soon as she was born, but fate is very scary. You can’t do anything either, Elder Wolhwa!”So Victoria was a wife in one of Soo Nam’s past lives, too?Wolhwa says that he himself is also at fault for believing in people.

Soo Nam calls Yeo Ok a fool for not requesting alimony, which is when she reveals that she put the apartment and all of their savings under her name. Thanks to a little trick from Wolhwa, Soo Nam loses his balance and trips down a long flight of steps.Yeo Ok calls after him, running towards him to find that he is unconscious and bleeding.Moo San is excited- Yeo Ok wouldn’t react like this if she didn’t still love Soo Nam, right?Yeo Ok yells at Wolhwa to call for help. We flash back to a much younger Soo Nam and Yeo Ok at a jewelry store.Yeo Ok buys a ring for her mother, while Soo Nam buys an engagement ring- Moo San is his salesperson. They both have their purchases wrapped, accidentally switching boxes.Soo Nam notices the switch as a storm kicks up outside, and he runs after Yeo Ok.Lightning strikes as he runs, decimating the store. He doesn’t get his ring back.

We then cut to him having dinner with another girl, In Young (Eugene). He explains that the ring saved his life, telling her how he ran after the ring he’d actually purchased, which was intended as an engagement ring. She takes this moment to tell him that she’s on her way to volunteer in Africa and not looking to get married.Soo Nam is devastated, drowning his feelings in a bottle of wine while In Young continues eating.

Yeo Ok and Soo Nam both wind up on the same ferry to Jeju Island.Wolhwa approaches Soo Nam, dressed as a normal guy, introducing himself as “the Elder who brings husbands and wives together“.Yeo Ok eavesdrops.Soo Nam asks him to ensure that he and In Young end up together- Wolhwa answers he only brings together those who are a match that heaven has been working on for hundreds of years.People die alone because they haven’t built up enough favor with him.He tells Soo Nam to let In Young go- his real match is close by, and they’ll meet soon.Later that day, Yeo Ok rescues Nam Soo from drowning at the beach.

In the present, the ambulance takes Soo Nam and Yeo Ok away. Moo San reiterates that she hasn’t done anything and that Yeo Ok deserves better than Soo Nam, telling Wolhwa that he should break Soo Nam’s legs- Wolhwa says that punishment isn’t big enough. He suddenly appears in the middle of the road in front of the ambulance, causing the driver to turn away and crash into a tree, knocking Soo Nam and Yeo Ok both unconscious.

TV Guide [Drama Edition]: KBS2TVs Oohlala CoupleEp. 02

At the hospital, Yeo Ok wakes up in severe pain, calling for Soo Nam.A nurse realizes she’s calling for the person she arrived with, and sends her off to the ICU.She freaks out at the sight of her own body lying on the cot, which gets her sent back to her original room by the hospital staff.Her mother-in-law and Il Ran show up and ask what’s going on, hitting her (remember, they think they’re talking to Soo Nam) for landing Yeo Ok in the ICU.Later, they overhear Yeo Ok talking to her own body- where she assumes Soo Nam must be- about the affair.Because of the switch, they think it’s Yeo Ok who had the affair.

Soo Nam’s mother forces Yeo Ok to go home, saying she has to work tomorrow, which brings on a whole new level of panic for Yeo Ok. Soo Nam’s mom is there when Soo Nam (in Yeo Ok’s body) wakes up.He demands to know where “that woman” is and if she’s okay, when he notices his long hair and new figure- he checks himself in the mirror and faints. He wakes up in the middle of the night and storms down to the lobby.Yeo Ok approaches from behind and touches his shoulder, which sends him skittering across the floor. He gets up, examines Yeo Ok, and screams, “MY BODY!

contagion’s Thoughts:

[ Note : This post reflects the opinions of the author, not necessarily those of ohkpop ]

Now that we’ve reached the body-swap part of the show, I think we can expect the next episode to be a lot funnier than this one. I really appreciate the writers’ decision to set the rules of this show early on.We understand why fate is trying so hard to keep these two together, even if we don’t quite understand how everything went wrong.I’m very interested to see how they turn things around, because I’m pretty sure nobody wants to see the main couple stay together right now.I mean, they have gone to great lengths to make Soo Nam into a terrible person, so they must have a heck of a plan to redeem him.

I mentioned it in my last review, but I love how Soo Nam’s family seems to genuinely like Yeo Ok and think that Soo Nam’s an idiot for being mean to her, even while they take advantage of her. This is such a true-to-life family dynamic that we hardly ever see in the media, and I’m impressed.I feel really bad for poor Gi Chan, who’s stuck in the middle of all of this.

I don’t have too much else to say yet (other than to compliment the actors on their excellent performances), since these episodes have been mostly set-up.Can’t wait for episode three!

Fashion Style Breakdown: actress Kim Jung Eun in KBS drama Oohlala Couple

Fashion Style Breakdown: actress Kim Jung Eun in KBS drama Oohlala Couple

(This post reflects the opinions of the author and not necessarily those of OhKpop)

KBS 2TV‘s new drama ’Oohlala Couple‘ is off to a good start as its ratings already hit two-digits with the release of just three episodes. If I was to summarize the general plot in a few words, I would say it is a married couple edition of the movie ‘Freaky Friday‘. It deals with a mix of several different typical K-drama themes such as soul switching, power of fate, and infidelity. It’s a predictable drama that illustrates a serious social issue in a lighthearted manner by giving it a fantasy twist.

What we cannot label as ‘typical’ is the carefully crafted outfits of actress Kim Jung Eun. Kim Jung Eun, who plays the middle-aged housewife Na Yuh Ok, proved that housewives can look chic even while doing various chores in the house. So without further ado, let’s check out some of my favorite looks that Kim Jung Eun rocked in the drama ‘Oohlala Couple’.

Fashion Style Breakdown: actress Kim Jung Eun in KBS drama ‘Oohlala Couple’

In this scene, Kim Jung Eun is wearing a mustard-yellow round-neck knit with a light peach accent on the collar sleeves. The adorable round peach-colored collar gives an overall lovable look to the outfit. She matched the knit top with a unique two-tone pleated skirt. The ashy lilac and yellow-green color of the skirt tones down the bubbly knit top, making the outfit appropriate for Na Yuh Ok the housewife.

In this outfit, Kim Jung Eun is dressed in a grey, crew neck sweater as well as a grey, a-line pleated skirt accented with a wine-colored hem from Marc by Marc Jacobs 2012 F/W line. She is also accessorizing her top with a detachable collar in dark purple, completing the sophisticated and modern look. The burgundy accessories, such as the skinny belt and the watch, lighten up the grey outfit and are perfect for the upcoming fall weather. The next part of this outfit is my favorite: Marc by Marc Jacobs Irina from the 2012 F/W Collection!

The two-tone color of this bag really completes the chic, sophisticated aura of the whole outfit. The gold front flap enhances the classic look of the bag and also makes it casual and simple enough to pass as an everyday carry. This Marc by Marc Jacobs bag costs $498 and is made of 100% cow leather (credit: Marc by Marc Jacobs).

Fashion Style Breakdown: actress Kim Jung Eun in KBS drama ‘Oohlala Couple’

You have probably already guessed by now, but Na Yuh Ok has a very modern yet sophisticated style for a housewife in her mid-to-late thirties (I’m assuming). Most of her outfits are very simple and styled with long, pleated skirts. Subtle accents with various accessories and different ways of color-blocking add to her overall look. This outfit is of no exception as it mixes two simple pieces: a beige skirt and a white, square-neck blouse with ruffled shoulders. The overall outfit was kept very simple and elegant with a black belt giving the illusion of an hourglass figure.

All in all, I am in love, in total awe, of Kim Jung Eun’s look in ‘Oohlala Couple’. It’s very sophisticated, chic, modern, and yet casual and comfortable. If you’re caught up with this newly released drama, then tell us which one of Na Yuh Ok’s outfit was your favorite. If you have yet to watch ‘Oohlala Couple’, I totally recommend the drama if you have a few extra moments to spare.

This show does not waste any time getting down to business.

TV Guide [Drama Edition]: KBS2TVs Oohlala CoupleEp. 01

Go Soo Nam (Shin Hyun Joon) and Na Yeo Ok (Kim Jung Eun) were spies in their previous lives during the Japanese occupation.Yeo Ok was a geisha named Sayuri who performed for military officials, while her lover (we don’t know his name, but it’s past-life Soo Nam) is posing as a journalist. They’ve promised to leave this world together and live happily as husband and wife in their next lives. However, Sayuri gets caught by the government and commits suicide to evade capture.Soo Nam is devastated and promises that they will still spend their next lives together.

Present-day life is a different story.Yeo Ok and Nam Soo share a large home with their son, Gi Chan (Uhm Do Hyun), who’s in fifth grade, Nam Soo’s mom (Jung Jae Soon), and Nam Soo’s younger sister, Il Ran (Hyun Jyu Ni).Nam Soo is absolutely terrible to Yeo Ok, ruling that chores are “the wife’s duty” and accusing her of stealing money from him.The others are no better, demanding she help them with everything and then complaining she’s not doing it right. On the day we come into their lives, she’s had enough- she storms out, announcing she’s on strike.

She visits her friend Na Ae Sook (Ryu Shi Hyun), who is having her own problems – her husband, lawyer Lee Baek Ho (Choi Sung Gook) is having an affair with an employee at his firm.Ae Sook says she doesn’t want a divorce, so Yeo Ok gets straight to business. She tracks down the mistress (Bae Jung Ah, played by Nam Gyu Ri) and drags her to a cafe to meet Ae Sook.

Jung Ah is unimpressed, saying that “oppa” wants a divorce but he pities his wife too much to go through with it.She babbles on about handling this calmly, when Ae Sook throws water in her face and starts dragging her around by her hair (I can’t really blame her).Ae Sook and Yeo Ok pull out a literal weapon- a large kitchen knife (which the censors were kind enough to pixelate for us- can’t have our youngsters seeing that!).They hand it to Jung Ah, who stares at it in confusion long enough for Yeo Ok to take a photo. Ae Sook snatches the knife out of Jung Ah’s hand and stabs the table, challenging Jung Ah to a fight, and Yeo Ok threatens to spread the photo around with the title “adulteress” if Jung Ah goes near Baek Ho again – Jung Ah whimpers in fear that she won’t.She scampers out and spends the rest of the afternoon sobbing in a bathroom stall and ignoring Baek Ho’s calls.

Meanwhile, at the hotel where he’s a second-level manager, Soo Nam complains about Yeo Ok to one of the chefs. He says he’s been treating her so well (really, Soo Nam?), but she’s ungrateful. Before he can get too far into his world of delusion, he gets a text that VVIP customer Han Mal Sook has arrived. He bends over backwards to accommodate her, and she gushes over how he remembered her favorite roses and wine and wishes that her deadbeat husband was more like Soo Nam (no, Mrs. Han, you really don’t).She wonders out loud if Soo Nam is this good to his wife – he sputters in response – so he’s *not* completely oblivious that he’s a terrible husband! Later, we find out that Soo Nam and his coworker Song Young Kyu (Kang Jin Goo) are both up for promotion to general manager at the hotel, and much to Young Kyu’s dismay, Soo Nam impresses the boss right away.

That evening, Soo Nam goes to the hotel bar to talk to Mal Sook. She’s decided to divorce Mr. Han. Soo Nam cites that seven out of ten people who divorce regret it later, and she shoots back, “Do you think I should sleep under the same blanket as him?!

Well, I’m not exactly saying that, but… A husband and wife… They don’t just share a blanket. They cover each other’s wounds and cover up each other’s flaws.Isn’t that how they should live? That’s what I think.

Mal Sook’s husband arrives to try to explain how it was just a misunderstanding despite that he was photographed leaving a hotel with another woman, and Soo Nam leaves. On his way home, Soo Nam gets a call from Il Ran- Yeo Ok’s strike is real, and the family’s resorted to- gasp!- Chinese delivery for dinner! He calls one of his employees, Victoria Kim (Han Chae Ah), who’s setting out dinner at home to tell her he can’t come over tonight because he has to deal with his wife. (You’re cheating, too? Are all the men on this show terrible human beings?)

Once he gets home, he immediately starts fighting with Yeo Ok, which prompts her to deliver an ultimatum – she’s moving into the apartment their family owns ASAP, and if Soo Nam doesn’t straighten up by the end of the year, she’s leaving for good!  She walks, zombie-like, to a street food tent along the Han river.Moo San (Narsha) magically pops out of thin air next to the man running the stand (Byun Hee Bong), and he chastises her for startling him.He goes on to complain about how hard he worked to bring Soo Nam and Yeo Ok together.Moo San answers that it’s not her fault things are like this.

The next day, Yeo Sook visits the apartment to inform the current tenants that they’ll need to leave. No one is there, so she lets herself in.She hears someone coming and tries to leave quickly, but stops short when she sees that the someone is her husband- with another woman! She ducks into the bathroom and watches in horror as Soo Nam and Victoria make out in the living room before heading to the bedroom. Yeo Ok has a panic attack, gasping for air as she rushes out of the building.

Yeo Ok has a conversation with herself (literally- there are two Seo Oks on screen). She considers a divorce as she doesn’t think she can ever forgive Soo Nam. Other-Yeo-Ok says that if Yeo Ok wants a divorce, she’d better be smart about it!Change the apartment so that it’s under her name.Squirrel away extra money.Get evidence of Soo Nam’s infidelity.Take that guy for all he’s worth.

Yeo Ok goes back to the house, all smiles and laughter (creepy, fake laughter, but laughter all the same), saying the strike was a joke and everything’s fine now. Soo Nam is furious, and says that he needs to “put [Yeo Ok] in her place”. Her passiveness makes him even angrier and he threatens to throw her out if she steps out of line. This pushes her over the edge, and she accuses him of having an affair – whoops! He chokes and sputters and starts screaming even more, so she just goes back to that creepy laugh and tells him she was just kidding and that he shouldn’t speak so carelessly.

At the apartment, Victoria takes a pill and then hops into bed with Soo Nam.She asks if he knows anything about the storybook character Pippi Longstocking, and tells him the author lived near her hometown in Sweden. She’s always felt an affinity for the brave character, and Soo Nam asks if that’s why Victoria is so brave, promising to take care of her.Is she sick?

As they kiss, we pan back to find out that this exchange is on video, and that Soo Nam is watching it on his laptop at the very same table where Yeo Ok and Ae Sook pulled the knife on Jung Ah.He looks terrified.Across from him, Yeo Ok glares, stone-faced.

contagion’s Thoughts:

[ Note : This post reflects the opinions of the author, not necessarily those of ohkpop]

Yikes- what a way to start off a comedy series!I’m already in love with Yeo Ok for being so smart and straightforward, and for being so fearless when it came to taking care of Ae Sook.Kim Jung Eun is great in the role, bringing a lot of heart to a no-nonsense character – stay-at-home moms can be fearsome beings, but they’re also some of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and I think she balances Yeo Ok’s characteristics well.

While I think Shin Hyun Joon is brilliant as Soo Nam, part of the brilliance is that he makes me absolutely hate him. It’s so bad that I’m not at all sure how he’s going to redeem himself. However, I trust the writers. They seem to really have a grasp on these multifaceted characters. For example, rather than make Soo Nam’s mother just an evil mother-in-law or a just a caretaker, they made her into someone who really does love Yeo Ok, but who totally takes her for granted – it’s possible to do both, and rare to see on TV, especially within just one episode.

All in all, I’m very impressed, and excited to see where this series goes!
