The Fairy and the Woodcutter: tragic love, Korean-syle

The Fairy and the Woodcutter is one of the most popular of all Korean folktales. Almost all children in Korea grow up reading a version of this love story. The story has three well-known versions that differ mainly in plot length. The following is a synopsis of the full version of the folktale.

There once was a poor woodcutter who lived with his mother. One day, he helped a wounded deer escape from hunters. As a show of gratitude, the deer informed the woodcutter of a nearby pond where fairies came down from the heavens to bathe every month. The deer pointed out that the woodcutter would be able to marry one of the fairies by hiding the fairy”s winged clothing-her only means of flight. He could then come to the rescue of the stranded fairy. The only proviso: everything was to be kept secret from his wife until they had at least three children. With these instructions, the woodcutter was successful in taking a fairy as his wife, and they had two children together. Content and happy, the woodcutter now felt comfortable enough to prematurely come clean. He showed his wife the winged clothing. Upon seeing her wings again, the wife could not help but feel a pang of yearning for home. She decides to return to the heavens, taking the children with her.

Highlights: “Birth of a Beauty,” Episode 2

Game on! Our favorite duo from “Birth Of A Beauty“, Sa Ra (Han Ye Seul) and Han Tae Hee (Joo Sang Wook) are teaming up together! The first week introduced us a story joined with solid character development and hilarious blend of comedy. I will present my top five scenes from the second episode. The drama quickly moves from Sara’s surgery to a nice setup for a beauty’s revenge.

1. Sara learns more about the identity of “Dr.” Han Tae Hee

After a personal training session, Sa Ra believes she popped a breast implant during her workout. Uncomfortable with the idea, Tae Hee reveals he isn’t really a doctor. However, after signing the super-sketchy contract, she is still bound to cooperate with the mysterious man. Later on, she quickly figures out that Tae Hee had a close relationship with Yoon Chae Yeon (Wang Ji Hye). Bingo! They both have something in common: destroying a wedding!

by Dramabeans:

It’s a grand entrance for a gorgeous woman, whom we’ll come to know as SA-RA (Han Ye-seul), who walks down a street and turns heads left and right with her stunning appearance. Everywhere she goes she attracts admiring glances and drops jaws; she explains that she’s an actress who’s just come back to Korea after working in the U.S. This makes sense to everyone who sees her, and she gets the royal treatment.

She gets her fortune told by a face reader, who is awed by the interesting combination of fates she holds in her hands (er, face): Not only is she an uncommon beauty, she also has the fortune of a military general and might even save the nation. That is, if she steers clear of her two pitfalls: the need to get involved in matters, and bad guys.

Korean OCN Drama Bad Guys Episode 10 Recap and Screenshots

by Dramabeans:

That doesn’t look like a bloody good time, does it? This is the episode where things we’ve come to known start to unravel at our feet. Not only do our characters start to suspect the truth that they’ve told, but I’m starting to doubt some of the things we’ve seen in past episodes. Bad Guys has always hinted at the idea that things are not always what it seems, but now I’m starting to feel like I’ve been tricked into believing events that may or may not have taken place.

Korean OCN Drama Bad Guys Episode 11 Recap (final)

by Dramabeans:

It’s the final chapter for Team Crazy Dogs and a lengthy one at that—there’s so much information crammed into this 86-minute finale, it makes you wonder how much more story the show wanted to tell. Evidently then answer is, a lot, and it can certainly tell a lot more, if given the opportunity.

We get all the answers to Jung-moon’s past and Goo-tak’s source of resentment, as well as others coming clean but not necessarily looking to be forgiven. Bad Guys makes sure to keep us on our toes and our eyes glued to the screen until the very end. And for our last ratings check-in, Bad Guys ended on a high-note of 4.1%.

The holiday season has descended upon us which often means a break from work and school. There were many great Korean dramas released in 2014 and if you haven’t caught on up them, now is a great time.

Two underrated dramas that deserve a second-look

Most Villainous K-Drama Characters Of 2015 So Far

(Photo : KBS2 )

The first half of 2015 delivered a plethora of K-Drama villains, who have hailed from different age groups and socio-economic backgrounds. While evil conglomerate heirs continue to be oft-used plot devices, dramas such as “The Girl Who Sees Smells” and “Who Are You: School 2015” have presented other terrifying archetypes.

CEO Byun Mi Seok (Na Young Hee) from “Producer” is a recent example of a supporting character whose horrible deeds created the perfect storm of K-Drama turmoil. She relentlessly pursued success through a series of young K-pop starlets, working them to exhaustion, before trading them in for a new trainee. As the series concluded it was revealed that CEO Byun had created a fantastic origin story for Cindy (IU), even though it involved having the teen idol denounce her deceased parents. The most disquieting aspects of CEO Byun were her reactions to situations like Cindy”s injury, which appeared to be ripped from the headlines of Korean entertainment news.
