Casting Drama: Should Idols Act? Written by Joyce On August 22, 2014
In recent weeks, drama land has been filled with news of idols being cast in lead roles — Sun-hwa in Rosy Lovers; Rain, Krystal and L in My Lovely Girl; Soo-young in My Spring Day. While idols venturing into the acting field is nothing new, I doubt there’s ever been such a high percentage of lead roles given to idols.
While there are a handful of idols who have successfully proven their worth in the acting world (Yoochun, Rain, Lee Seung-gi, Lee Joon, Seo In-guk, etc), it’s not surprising that most idol casting news is met with a healthy amount of skepticism and unhappiness
Yoon Kye Sang and Han Ji Hye‘s drama, “Beyond the Clouds,” received rather low ratings for its premiere.
KBS 2TV drama “Beyond the Clouds” aired its first episode on January 17 and received a viewership rating of 3.7%. This was a 2.4% drop from the 6.1% ratings its predecessor, “Prime Minister and I,” received. Knowing that the drama will air in a very competitive time slot, “Beyond the Clouds” had tried to be strategic in its opening by airing its first two episodes together. However, the second episode received and improved, but still low, rating of 5.1%.
With Yoon Kye Sang and Han Ji Hye leading the cast and a solid story line, “Beyond the Clouds” doesn’t lack in star power or storytelling, but its starting at a time when its competitors have already developed a strong and loyal following
New Monday & Tuesday KBS drama “Beyond the Clouds” will broadcast its first and second episodes on February 17. “Beyond the Clouds” will be competing for ratings against SBS drama “Kind Words” and MBC historical drama “Empress Ki.”
“Beyond the Clouds” follows the drama “Prime Minister and I,” which had fallen to last place in the rating against the currently airing SBS and MBC drama. “Beyond the Clouds” hopes to change the ranking of the ratings with its production quality and story.
KBS commented “Last week, there was hot response to the teaser for ‘Beyond the Clouds.’ We are able to check viewer anticipation for the drama.”
Yoon Kye Sang, Han Ji Hye, Jo Jin Woong, and Kim Yoo Ri will star in this drama
Holding onto both smiles and tears, KBS’ Prime Minster and I came to an end on Tuesday night.
The drama jumped from 4.9 to 6.1 percent with its final episode, but still remained in third place in the Monday-Tuesday drama competition. The drama was not able to break 10 percent in its run, especially with a strong competitor like MBC’s Empress Ki.
However, without last minute twists. Prime Minister and I wrapped up with warmth and sweetness in the air with its family-related plotline about the contracted marriage between a prime minister and a scandal reporter.
The Full Sun will pick up after Prime Minister and I on February 10.

With just one episode remaining, KBS′ Prime Minister and I hit its all-time low.
On Monday night, Prime Minister and I dropped to 4.9 percent, its lowest ratings ever since the drama began in December of 2013.
The episode also proved to be important as a big decision was made by Nam Da Jung (Yoona) in terms of her marriage with Kwon Yul (Lee Bum Soo), especially with the return of his wife, who was thought to be dead.
Meanwhile, MBC′s Empress Ki stayed in the 20 percent range with 23.9. SBS′ A Warm Word recorded 9.9.

Although it brought in a twist on Tuesday night, KBS’ Prime Minister and I stayed low in the ratings game.
Just as Kwon Yul (Lee Bum Soo) finally decided to move on from his dead wife and open up his heart for Nam Da Jung (Yoona), it was revealed that Kwon Yul’s dead wife was actually not dead and still alive, bringing an unexpected love triangle into the picture.
Despite the twist, Prime Minister and I dropped 0.1 percent compared to the previous ratings.
MBC’s Empress Ki, on the other hand, hit its all-time high with 22.6 percent as Ki Seung Nyang (Ha Ji Won) officially began her revenge.

While it might have been a low point for Ki Seung Nyang (Ha Ji Won)’s life, MBC’s Empress Ki was in high spirits, recording its highest ratings to date.
On Monday night, Empress Ki hit 20.8 percent. Its previous record was 20.3 percent, showing a rise of 0.5 percent since then.
The episode brought several dramatic moments, such as the loss of a baby, the false news of a death, and a birth secret in the making.
With these events continuing to pour out, viewers are paying close attention to how these conflicts will be resolved in the near future.

It isn’t the lowest we′ve seen, but KBS’ Prime Minster and I continued its reign over last place with lower ratings.
On Monday night, Prime Minister and I recorded 6.9 percent in ratings, slipping back from its previous 7.3 percent.
The lowered ratings come from an episode that included a kiss, a special serenade from Lee Bum Soo, and a cameo appearance from EXO’s Suho.
As EXO’s Suho is expected to appear for a longer period of time in the following episodes, perhaps Prime Minster and I will see the EXO effect in the coming days, especially since nothing else seems to be working against such a big rival like MBC′s Empress Ki.

MBC’s popular drama series “Empress Ki” has secured its ratings crown for a whopping 10th week in a row.
The 50-part historic epic dominated AGB Nielsen Media Research (Nielsen Korea)’s ratings chart again after drawing in an average viewership of 18.5 percent during January 6 and 7, the chart showed on Wednesday.

On Tuesday night, Kwon Yul (Lee Bum Soo) made a move after tiptoeing around Nam Da Jung (Yoona) and his feelings for her.
It must be the miracle of love, because ratings for KBS’ Prime Minister and I did not decrease at all. The ratings didn’t increase either, but for Prime Minster and I to stay past the five percent range, it is something to be excited for as the drama previously struggled with lower ratings.
Meanwhile, MBC’s Empress Ki climbed up to 19.1 while SBS’ A Warm Word entered into two digits with 10.5 percent.

According to a source, the news of YoonA and Lee Seung Gi’s relationship has done little to interfere with the filming for YoonA’s current KBS 2TV drama, “Prime Minister And I.”
In fact, a representative for “Prime Minister And I” told Sports Seoul, “The atmosphere on the set of the drama is hardly any different than it was before. YoonA shows the same focus toward the drama as before. Since relationships are a personal thing, the other actors or staff appear to not be paying any attention to it.”
News of YoonA and Lee Seung Gi’s relationship went public on January 1. Since then, public interest towards YoonA’s drama, “Prime Minister And I” has increased. There had also been some concerns about the news negatively affecting the drama’s effort to create a romantic line between YoonA and the Prime Minister
What will it take for KBS’ Prime Minster and I to spurt up again?
On Monday night, the blossoming romance between Kwon Yul (Lee Bum Soo) and Nam Da Jung (Yoona) was more visible with the two characters slowly coming into realization that there may be more than just a contract marriage.
On top of that, Kang In Ho (Yoon Shi Yoon) has also come into the picture, causing more conflicts.
Despite the continuous flow of the storyline, the drama dropped down to 7.3 percent, although these numbers are still high compared to its previous ratings before award ceremonies.
Meanwhile, MBC’s Empress Ki kept its number one position after returning from a week hiatus due to end-of-the-year ceremonies. SBS’ A Warm Word, however, suffered a bit with a decrease
The live blog team is currently running on dangerous amounts of caffeine, and I’m pretty sure I just saw a purple elephant fly by the window but the show must go on. So far we’ve covered the all three Entertainment Awards from KBS, SBS, and MBC, the SBS Gayo Daejun, and the MBC Drama Awards. Now, we will be ending the year with a bang by proving live blog coverage of the 2013 SBS Drama Awards AND the 2013 KBS Drama Awards, which are airing later today at the same time.
First, I’m going to shake my fists at these broadcasters for not separating their awards out. After that’s done, we’re happy to announce that we will be covering both awards at the same time here at Soompi. This is going to be an interesting way of finishing the year, that’s for sure
