K-Drama Feature: Makjang

K-Drama Feature: Makjang
Love it or hate it, K-Dramas are rife with makjang, the Korean term for over the top or ridiculous subplots and coincidences that keep the viewers tuning in week after week. A drama doesn"t have to be terrible or illogical to be makjang, it could be extremely well-acted or tug at your heartstrings.

Despite the negative connotations, does it truly have to be a bad thing? There are some great dramas that are simply amazing to watch, but when you try and sit down to describe the plot, it seems to get, well, laughable. To wit, here are just a few entertaining dramas that have absolutely preposterous storylines (WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD):

TRIANGLE

Three brothers are separated at a very young age as a result of their parents" death. A lovely overused trope that they play up here

Interview with Swedish YouTube Singer Impaofsweden

By in News posted Oct June 5th, 2014 No comments

YouTube singer Impaofsweden, like her name reveals, hails from Sweden. She first discovered BIGBANG’s G-Dragon in 2010, which was a great intro to the world of K-Pop. She discovered her love for singing later than the usual child who dreams of becoming a singer as a teen. Despite her “slow” start, it quickly became her biggest interest. Impaofsweden started uploading her first cover on YouTube in December 2011, which was labelmate 2NE1’s “Hate You.”

“Wait- did 2NE1 release an English version?” That’s probably one of the first thoughts that popped into your mind while listening to the audio. If you check out her other covers, you’ll realize that all the covers are in English

BoA’s “Make Your Move” Movie Review and Premiere Coverage

By in News posted Oct April 19th, 2014 No comments

Soompi covers BoA’s highly anticipated “Make Your Move” featuring “Dancing with the Stars” dancer Derek Hough!

Certainly without a dull moment, “Make Your Move” kicks off high energy, never once missing a chance to showcase its overwhelmingly talented stars. With a starkly different image than that of her old school idol persona, BoA plays an independent, adventurous, and effortlessly sexy Aya, a Zainichi Korean woman set on following her dreams with her fusion hip-hop Taiko group COBU. It is when Donny, played by Derek Hough, shows up and takes her head on in a club tap dancing battle that her world is pulled asunder. “Make Your Move” is a modern-day Romeo & Juliet (but much happier and definitely not sleep-inducing), jam packed with familial drama, intricate dance sequences, and a soundtrack appealing to all audiences

Three Days: Episode 6 Recap by Dramabeans

March 7, 5:30 AM. 33 hours, 30 minutes after the sniping.

Cha-young is investigating the tennis court gates at the presidential villa. If the sniper was stationed inside the villa, the gate had to be open to allow a clear shot. But in her interrogation at the end of Episode 5, Cha-young was told that the gates were closed at the time of the shooting.

She times herself running from the gate to the office. Seven minutes. Even if Ham could have made it in 5 minutes, it still wouldn’t be fast enough. The blackout and the shooting were almost simultaneous. There’s only one possible answer: Ham had an accomplice at the tennis court gate — someone else from inside the Secret Service

Thoughts On Recent “You Who Came From The Stars”

Thoughts On Recent “You Who Came From The Stars” by Couch-Kimchi:

So Do Manager and the infamous actress are in love. We know this because he was lonely, missed her dearly and couldn’t resist kissing her.

We know she loves him because she’s gotten a tad obsessed and even considers marrying him for spousal privilege if he’s a criminal. And, oh yeah, she also confessed. “Do you see me as a woman? No, don’t you dare tell me! I don’t want to hear it! But do you?” She’s the cutest.

I also love how she gets dressed up like she’s going to the Oscars when she’s going to see him.

We’ve now gotten into Angst City and will probably be here for a long time because the drama has already begun to give us dream sequences that show the couple in happy times

I Need Romance 3 - Episode 1, Episode 2 Recap by Couch-Kimchi:

The third installment of the I Need Romance series is here and I bet you thought you learned something about romance in the first two series, right? Pfft. Those two were chickenfeed compared to this drama which is pulling all the stops when it comes to romance. And to show just how serious they are about it, there’s French everywhere. The first words spoken are: “J’ai envie de romance” which means I might need to have Google Translate open to keep from missing anything.

***

The drama begins with a little girl walking in the first snowfall of the year with a cute French song playing in the background. Where’s she going? The male narrator tells us that she was going to see him shortly after exiting his mother’s womb

One Warm Word Episode 3 Recap

A secret never stay hidden forever, the truth always prevails. No matter how hard people are trying to hide their secrets, their problems, sooner or later, people will discover them. For Jae Hak and Eun Jin; they know they cannot hide their relationship forever; they’re not naive but obviously they don’t realize that Mi Kyung has already found out about their “humane relationship”. People say the quiet ones usually are the ones who’ll attack and cause extensive damages; so they’d better get ready because Mi Kyung will do anything she can to “torture” them.

Prime Minister and I - Episode 1 Recap by Dramabeans:

Next in the KBS rom-com lineup is Prime Minister and I, whose light and breezy tone took me by surprise. I knew to prepare myself for the cute, but I didn’t expect it to also stir the heartstrings in the first hour. There’s promise and potential in a story that moves fairly quickly that contains both heartwarming and funny notes. And damn, a prime minister has never looked this good.

Even though Prime Minister and I took in last place at 5.9% against its competitors (Empress Ki [♥] led the pack with 20.2% and A Warm Word followed with 6.8%), maybe a contract marriage is just the kind of hijinks medicine I need.

EPISODE 1 RECAP

Basketball: Episode 16 RECAP by Drama Beans

Chi-ho proposes, San interrupts, and the factory grandma makes it her goal in life to sing San’s praises so that Shin-young doesn’t have a chance to give her yea or nay on the marriage.

Chi-ho elects to wait while the grandma drags Shin-young with her and a few other workers to see a doctor, and it’s only after they get a checkup that Shin-young hears that the surgery for Bong-soon’s father has already beenpaid for.

And who else should be the benefactor but Chi-ho, who Bong-soon graciously thanks while Shin-young bites her lip nervously. He tells her that he’s going to visit his father to receive his blessing for their marriage, which only makes Shin-young more uncomfortable as her eyes keep darting between him and San

We open at a banquet hall where preparations are underway, leading up to the arrival of our hero, Prime Minister KWON YUL (Lee Beom-soo) and his wife, NAM DA-JUNG (Yoon-ah), who greet the roomful of dignitaries with a smile.

But there’s a different story that lies beneath those adoring smiles as the power couple turns to each other… and exchange looks of distaste.

An imagined Matrix style fight scene points to a more tense and hostile relationship between them. And while the world may regard her husband as a respected public figure, our heroine doesn’t share in that opinion because, well, they’re in a contract marriage

Running Man: Episode 173 Recap by Drama Beans

Bellies stuffed, the cast readies themselves for a post-dinner mission on this MT (short for “membership training,” an overnight trip where schoolmates or co-workers play games, eat, and drink a-plenty) with guests Ryu Hyun-jin and Suzy.

Their task is to find (or steal) the pillows hidden in the basecamp and return to their sleeping quarters to stake their claim to one of six spots. Last week’s winnings equate to each member’s allotted time for the game, which means the Betrayal Trio only have about thirteen minutes.

Losers’ punishment: washing dishes. But at least this means everyone gets to sleep indoors? Haha: “I already assumed that I’d be on dish duty

Everyone’s in shock after Shin-young and Chi-ho’s wedding announcement, but no one more than San, who decides to go against his arrogant coach’s wishes and play the game with all he’s got.

Daddy Choi leaves feeling quite proud of himself, confident that the first score won in the game was won by Chi-ho. It’s Secretary Kim who breaks the news that it was someone from their team, causing Daddy Choi to start making his way back toward the court out of curiosity. Who could be giving the great Min Chi-ho a run for his money?

It’s none other than San, whom we see racing across the court with his teammates, sinking basket after basket. Bong-soon is adorably supportive as she gives the awed crowd San’s name so they can cheer for him: “Kang San! Min Chi-ho’s newest rival!”

The game gets fierce, and I mean fierce, when Chi-ho gets his head back into the game to take San head on
