Genre Recommendations: Second Chance K-Dramas

The dashing hero reaches out and holds the hands of his beloved. A gentle wind blows. Our captivating heroine with perfect makeup shyly looks up at the charming lead, who has risked life and limb to defeat all sorts of demons to reach this exact moment. Somehow cherry blossoms are falling around them like a flurry of snowflakes, even though there isn’t a cherry blossom tree in sight. The charming couple locks eyes, they move in for the grand finale: the kiss. They inch closer. And we all swoon when the much anticipated lip lock happens as an upbeat OST track plays in the background, signaling the end of a 20-episode run. We feel good. We are content, satisfied that that couple we had been cheering on for weeks has achieved their happily-ever-happy ending. Right? A recent trend in K-dramas explores the other side of the grand finale and the big kiss

Little to No Love for Spica.S’s “Give Your Love” Written by Camiele On September 17, 2014

It seems the latter part of 2014 begins the season of office fantasies. Sunny Hill returned with their ode to the work week romance, “Monday Blues,” and now we’ve got Spica.S, the “sexy side” of the powerhouse vocal group SPICA, giving us much face and fashion with their latest MV, “Give Your Love.”

Spica.S (meaning “Spica Special”) is the first foray into subunit territory for the vocal group. However, instead of being a specialty group consisting of only a few of the members, Spica.S seems to be a means for the girls to express their more daring, sensual sides. The only member who opted out, so to say, was Kim Bo Ah, who has taken the time to concentrate on a solo project

5 Things Every Korean Person Has Grown Up Doing‏

By in News posted Oct September 2nd, 2014 No comments

Ever caught yourself doing something and then thinking, ‘Gee, I wonder if I’m the only unlucky soul forced to do this in the world’? Well, don’t fret because, most likely, there is at least one other person who’s suffering with you!

If you’re Korean and have caught yourself wondering whether or not you are all alone in this world, here’s 5 Things Every Korean Child Has Grown Up Doing‏

1. Bowing to strangers on the street, assuming you know them somehow. There’s this thing about Korean communities all over the world— everyone is interconnected, one way or another. These connections can get so out-of-hand, you get used to being ambushed by random adults.

This is a situation you’ve probably been in at least once in your life: You’re walking along the street, minding your own business, when all of a sudden, out of nowhere: “Suzy! You’ve grown soooooo much!” You turn around, come face-to-face with a lady, maybe around your mother’s age, beaming at you, expecting an answer

BTS Exhibits Teenage Angst in “Danger”

BTS Exhibits Teenage Angst in “Danger” Written by Joyce On August 26, 2014

Anddd…. BTS has done it again. A badass song with a earworm-y unique chorus, paired together with sharp and energetic choreography — essentially how BTS has been hitting harder than their rookie group status, and portraying a maturity above their age.

“Danger” is somewhat of a sequel to “Boys in Luv”. After “Boys in Luv” revolved around the boy’s confession and the couple’s seemingly happy ending, “Danger” kicks in to enlighten us to the reality — a relationshop on the rocks. The boy feels like he’s in a one-sided relationship where the girl is not invested at all, so he takes the initiative to warn the girl that the relationship is in danger

K-Drama Feature: Makjang

K-Drama Feature: Makjang
Love it or hate it, K-Dramas are rife with makjang, the Korean term for over the top or ridiculous subplots and coincidences that keep the viewers tuning in week after week. A drama doesn"t have to be terrible or illogical to be makjang, it could be extremely well-acted or tug at your heartstrings.

Despite the negative connotations, does it truly have to be a bad thing? There are some great dramas that are simply amazing to watch, but when you try and sit down to describe the plot, it seems to get, well, laughable. To wit, here are just a few entertaining dramas that have absolutely preposterous storylines (WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD):

TRIANGLE

Three brothers are separated at a very young age as a result of their parents" death. A lovely overused trope that they play up here

By in News posted Oct March 23rd, 2014 No comments
If you paid attention to the "Korean Terms All K-Pop Fans Should Know" article, then you know that there are such things as dongans and no-ans. As a reminder, dongan is used to refer to someone who looks younger than their age - a "baby face." On the other hand, no-an is used to refer to someone who looks older than their age.

EPISODE 15 RECAP by Dramabeans

Even after Shinichi receives one of Baek-san’s finishing moves, he continues to fight until a group of Kaya’s henchmen come to fetch him on her orders. Shinichi refuses at first, wanting to finish the fight, but acquiesces immediately when the henchmen show him a mysterious black bag.

Baek-san acts all friendly to Jung-tae after the fight, though Jung-tae’s not too keen on returning the kindness. He promises to repay the debt he owes Baek-san (for saving him from Shinichi), but there’s something darker in that promise—he’s talking revenge.

But Baek-san, none the wiser, tells him that he owes him nothing: “Hwangbang will always protect you.” Oh, you mean when Hwangbang isn’t trying to kill him?

Kaya gets another chance to ask Leader Seol who killed her mother, but instead of answering her directly he tells her about her mother; the way she lived and the way she was loved at Club Shanghai, even though she was the highest female on the yakuza food chain

EPISODE 12: “No matter what side of yourself you show, I’ll stay beside you” recap by drama beans

After their argument in the middle of the street, Wan follows Joo-yeon ten steps behind her the rest of the way home. He sighs aloud that the kind of person who’d put her first is right by her side…but she can’t see him.

He regrets his jealous rant earlier about not wanting to lose her to Tae-yoon, realizing that she’s already upset and he just made things worse for her. “I should’ve just smiled, ‘I love you.’”

She eventually stops and tells him not to follow her, though he points out that they live together, so how could he not go in the same direction? She turns to go the other way, and he apologizes for everything, saying it was his fault

These two episodes offered many an adorable moment for our lead couple, even giving us a glimpse of what their normal, happy life could look like. As his departure looms ever closer, he begins to make some important decisions about his future actions. What’s the use of an eternal life if he can’t be beside his loved one?

“I Need Romance 3″ Episode 7 - 8 Recap by Couch-Kimchi:

This drama zips through relationships faster than a CW teen show. At this point, it’s like an American sitcom with 1-episode relationships except that instead of main characters dating quirky guest stars, they are dating other main characters.

Having said that, I found this week’s episodes a little interesting.

What happened?

We learn that for the two months Sweet Potato has lived with Joo Yeon, he’s been her unpaid homemaker and caretaker while she’s been too busy to relax and enjoy a meal. She doesn’t really stop till the night she cries after disappointing her sunbae. After resting on Wan’s comforting shoulders for a bit, she suddenly perks up, announces that she’s hungry and rummages through the fridge for something to eat

Age of Feeling: Episode 8 recap by drama beans

In order to help Jung-tae learn how to fight against swords, Boss Hwang takes him to the gibang to meet Ajusshi Choi. Though Jung-tae’s known him for a while, he seems unaware of Ajusshi’s past as a guard for the Korean Empire (which ended in 1910 when Japan annexed Korea).

So Ajusshi Choi takes Jung-tae under his tutelage, and despite what I thought, Jung-tae isn’t trying to learn how to use a sword, but to fight unarmed against one. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but… why wouldn’t he want to use a sword even just as a shield instead of relying on his squishy human flesh for protection?

But Jung-tae answers that question by learning Ajusshi Choi’s lessons with lightning-quick accuracy, and in the end, wins the fight with his fists

Prime Minister and I: Episode 16 Recap By DramaBeans

Despite Yul coming to collect her, Da-jung declares that she won’t be going back home with him, and adds for good measure: “Let’s break up.” But Yul refuses to hear it and takes her suitcase before ushering Da-jung into the car by the hand.

It’s a mostly silent ride until Yul pulls over to the side of the road and gets out to finally get some air. When Da-jung follows him, he demands to know her train of thought by having him meet his not-so-dead first wife and leaving them—was it for his sake? Or the children?

“It was for me,” Da-jung answers. The idea of becoming the children’s stepmother had scared her despite her feelings for Yul, and felt it appropriate to step aside now that their mother had reappeared

Heartache Takes Center Stage in “Man from the Stars”

By in News posted Oct January 24th, 2014 No comments

These episodes are jam-packed with heart wrenching emotion. The future doesn’t look too bright, especially with Min Joon’s departure looming ever closer. His desire to push Song Yi away grows, but so does his hopeless dream of a happy and normal life with heri at his side. For better or for worse, I’ve become heavily invested in the well-being of these characters. Seeing both Song Yi and Min Joon struggle through their heartache has left me emotionally drained and dejected. Keep in mind these feelings are a testament to just how great this show is.

Why is My Heart Breaking?

Min Joon Rejects Song Yi’s Confession

Min Joon’s run in with the psychopath Jae Kyung’s poisoned needle reminded him just how strong his feelings for Song Yi have grown. He’s convinced he must do all that he can to end his connection before it’s too late to recover
