'Discovery Of Love' Resurrects The Cappuccino Foam Kiss

By in posted Oct Comments off

The cappuccino foam kiss in "Secret Garden" was such a classic k-drama moment that it"s hard to ever sip a latte without wondering if Hyun Bin is going to wipe the foam from your upper lip.

In the "Secret Garden" scene he accuses Ha Ji Won of leaving the foam on her lip on purpose because it"s something girls do to get men to touch their lips. Of course Ha Ji Won"s character Gil Ra Im had no such intentions.

Apparently that scene has had the same effect on k-drama writers because so many dramas pay homage to it. It happened again this week in "Discovery of Love." It took place shortly after Yoon Hyun Min and Lee Seung Joon realized they were both in love with the character played by Kim Seul Gi. She had some foam on her upper lip and they both wanted to wipe it off

The mythical element is inextricably linked to Hong-bin"s anger issues that stem from him shattered family relations. It grounds the mysticism into a real and relatable subject matter. The broken relationship between Hong-bin and his father extends to his younger brother as well. Gaining a son, Chang, brings an element of family back into Hong-bin"s life that will be the pathway to reconnecting with the family he distanced himself from. It will also bring him closer to Se-dong who already intrigues him as much as she intrigues me.

Se-dong is a methodical woman who is a natural caregiver. She doesn"t blindly give to the point of harming herself, though, which makes her a rarity amongst K-drama heroines. Her way of handling the irrational Hong-bin by being earnest and truthful is just what he needs rather than people who tiptoe around him

[HanCinema"s Drama Review] "Blade Man" Episode 1

Sin Se-kyeong"s character, Son Se-dong, is quite dramatic in her own way. She is a Candy-like character, but with lots more gumption. The role already shows how much Sin as grown as an actor. Her presence on screen is commanding and no longer meek as it was in her earlier work. The character requires authority as well as an ability to be completely ridiculous to accommodate the over-the-top comedic moments. She also has a sweet chemistry with Jeong Yoo-geun who plays Hong-bin"s young son. The presence of his son is an overused plot device, but the way the boy is worked into the fabric of this comedy is endearing.

The plot is made interesting by how zany the characters are and the situations that they find themselves in. The emphasis on Hong-bin"s keen sense of smell gives Director Kim Yong-soo the perfect opportunity for creative camera work as the camera traces the paths the scents take from their source to Hong-bin"s nose
